 -why punt?

Maybe the coaches felt it would be better for us than replying to a:

"Why did they try to go for it on a 4th and 3 at the 36 yard line when we have one of the best kickers in CFB"

...type thread

THAT is exactly the point !   The Coach was more concerned with being criticized for a wrong decision about going for it than he was with winning.

Punting/kicking a FG in that situation tells your team "I don't have faith in you" - whereas going for it says the opposite.  "When the game is on the line, winners want the ball !  (I know it was a cheesy movie - but that is still the truth.)

I'm still curious as to why went for a 54 yard field goal instead of attempting a 4th down play. Either way if you fail they get the ball at the same spot, and don't say "oh we got da kloss man", 54 yards is low % for even pro kickers.

Shoulda went on that 4th & 1 too, before we got a delay of game.

We have one of best FG kickers in the country. It was the right decision

Taggart was playing for the field goal there.  It was Holtzesque.

BTW, Kloss' long was 52 last year.  You guys act like he is automatic from 54.

He had the distance

Trip you and I agree. This is crazy. The FG was the right move there.

I thought this was more about not going for it when they needed barely the yard from midfield?

That was a major mistake in my opinion.

Me too.

I would have been oky with going for it on 4th and 1 at the 50.

I think the long FG was the right call, but would have liked to see them try to get the 4th and 1 from mid field.

Honestly, it wasn't even just that. It's the fact that someone could actually believe that a coach would make a decision based on a concern with being criticized rather than trying to win the game .... Should have been a dozen facepalms.

The FG was not a horrible call. The kicking team was rushed as the play clock was running down. If kloss had more time maybe he would have made it

No way he was thinking about being being criticized. IMO he made the decision to play conservatively and I have no reason why he would do it.

He missed an opportunity on both those plays to show the offense and he believed in them to make critical plays. By punting on 4 the and 1 he gave up momentum and told the offensive line we don't trust you and by going for the FG he showed the he is not willing to put his foot on an opponents throat.

Even had they made that FG it was a one score game. Only reason going for a FG at that stage of the game would have been if it would have made it a two score game.

CWT seems to grow as a game day coach.

Anyone that thinks that CWT's motivation is anything other than winning, is nuts.
