Cousin Ricky, give me a break.  There's a hell of a difference between hiring coaches and assembling an NFL roster which is why the best teams have STRONG GMs and COACHES.  Rarely do you see a successful team in the NFL where an owner does everything like you saw in Oakland and what you're seeing right now in Dallas.  Oakland is one of the most dysfunctional sports teams in modern history and was being run by a man that was literally in the final years of having his lucidity.  This is a guy who made the coaches SIT MARCUS ALLEN while still in his prime!  To accomplish what he did there was a harder/better job under the circumstances than what many others have done.  Using your logic, you must think the OC in Denver could convert water to wine vs. they brought in one of the best QBs ever to play in the league.

Sorry, but your comment seems to imply you have a very rudimentary understanding of the situation he was in.  You don't stay in the NFL that many years unless you know Xs and Os.  Beyond that it's then up to your GM to give you the pieces to execute.

I understood where you were going.  I just saw some irony in the argument and pointed it out.  I did ace my Logic class even though it was 40 years ago.  Nothing personal, ever, from me.

It's a decent hire.

I think people gush about the "NFL" thing a little too much, but the guy is seasoned.

Can he handle young guys? Will he toughen up our defense? Can he recruit?

Those are the gray areas

Coach B has four daughters.  If he can manage four daughters, he can easily manage 100 college football student-athletes!

Maybe.  Or maybe he has been reduced to a blathering idiot.  Daughters will do that to you.  :)

I'm not sure why so many people are upset with this hire. We just hired a guy with a ton of experience, was part of national championship staff, lead an NFL team to the playoffs as DC 4 times, and has coached future hall of famers. USF is a young program, not in a major conference, has never won a conference championship, and I'm assuming had a budget of around $300,000. Not sure what some were expecting from our DC hire.

Fisrt off, prior to hiring the DC, considering the rest of staff we've brought in, almost none of them should be making well over 100 or 120K (Maybe Scott).  It really looked like there was a stock pile being saved for the DC position.  I realistically expected upwards of 400-450K on the DC position.  Reports that we were after Shannon pretty much confirmed it.  He was making 315K as LB coach at TCU.  Rumors may not have been true and we may never had gone after him.  IDK.  I can't find the data on Lance from Stanford.

Anyhow.  I hope this works out.  Willie should have fought harder for the staff budget.  He's got that same budget as Skip, but is making about $850K less personally.  Another 300-500K in that budget and we'd have probably had Lance from Stanford or Shannon.

We still have to pay skip 500K a year. That's factors in to the budget.

He did find a job. Maybe we owe him a discounted 500k

I will grant that much of his NFL experience is not impressive, but as others have pointed out he was with two of the most toxic franchises in the NFL. I lived in Cincinnatti from 93-99 and remember it. Imagine a city with Marge Schott and Mike Brown being the two franchise owners!!

So at this point I really can't say if it is a good hire or not, the proof will be next Autumn.
