I wouldn't be disappointed if they hired Davis. I actually think of the supposed candidates that he may be one of the better ones, especially if he was cleared by the NCAA - did seem odd that UNC curbed him when I didn't think he was responsible for it but they sure made him look like he was.

Can't say he'd recruit a roster full of NFL players, since we're not Miami, and he was still riding their (at the time) recent successes (even with having probation issues in the mid 90s), but my guess is he could recruit pretty well in Tampa. Even with his recruiting prowess, UNC wasn't a big destination school for football - so it's telling he was able to get decent guys there AND develop them into NFL players.

He definitely seems like a decent gameday coach. I do remember us stomping them in the rain in 2007, but I think they had TJ Yates as a freshman, and that team was young that year. Yates and that defense matured and were quite solid in 2010 and 2011, after Davis has been axed only weeks before the season started.

Edit - I still like Taggart (whether or not we've even talked to him) and MacIntyre. My only concern is that if we pass on Taggart and he ends up becoming an even better coach, that he doesn't end up at UCF or something.

Can Davis be hired as a coach? If this has already been mentioned then disregard. :)

"In February 2012, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hired Davis as a special assistant to newly hired head coach Greg Schiano. The terms of Davis' settlement with the University of North Carolina prevented him from taking a coaching position, and he was instead hired as an advisor to Schiano, who was the defensive coordinator under Davis at the University of Miami."

My understanding is that he could coach, but if he did he would give up $ owed to him by UNC. I'm pretty sure after this year, UNC stops owing him $ and he's free to coach

Davis was what a best 8 wins at UNC? Sure it's better than 3 but a guy like Butch would be here Short Term. If he has any success at all he will jump at the first job offered. I see Taggart more like Strong as someone with loyalty. Butch would be my 3rd choice behind Willie and Morris. I'd rather build long term success than go for a big name for a little bit - just my humble opinion.

I wonder how loyal Charlie would have been if L'ville wasn't going to the ACC ...?

Apparently you haven't read his quotes about why he stayed. Believe it or not there are quality coaches who care about more than making it to the SEC. Guys like him are not only winners but they are loyal and committed. I refuse to believe we can't have that. I get that it might not happen this time but it can happen. Butch is not that guy. I'm sure he would do great here I really do. I just don't think he is the "type" of coach that would get USF where we want to be. If he gets hired I will be all behind him though.

I am liking this guy. He has big time experience. I think he would be less of a gamble than some of the other names.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
