Seems like this defense is going to be well-suited for guys to stay fresh, with the rotating in and out frequently. D was on the field a BUNCH last year, and got worn down quickly. Hopefully this will help prevent that a little more.

Any reports on his injury? Sprain or worse?

Joey Johnston â€@JJohnstonTrib

#USF coach Skip Holtz says X-rays negative on ankle injury to freshman LB Tashon Whitehurst. Could return to practice any day.

Minor tweaks as Bulls update depth chart

USF football has released its first game-week depth chart of 2012, with only minor tweaks for the Bulls' opener against Chattanooga from the two-deep released two weeks ago in Vero Beach.

Biggest news? USF looks to be sticking with the offensive line shift that has sophomore Darrell Williams at left tackle and senior Mark Popek at left guard, but the Bulls shifted back to their original linebacker alignment, with senior Sam Barrington as the starting strongside linebacker and senior Mike Lanaris in the middle. Coaches had looked at sophomore Reshard Cliett as the starter outside, but he's listed as Barrington's backup.

There's a position battle at right tackle, where redshirt freshman Max Lang is listed as the starter ahead of sophomore Quinterrius Eatmon, who started every game there last season. Eatmon was limited by headache symptoms last week but is expected to be healthy for Saturday.

Other changes? At receiver, junior Derrick Hopkins, who has barely played at USF, is listed as a starter ahead of Deonte Welch and Victor Marc; Sterling Griffin, the team's leader in receptions last season, is listed as a backup to sophomore Andre Davis. And redshirt freshman walk-on Mattias Ciabatti appears to have held off two-year starter Justin Brockhaus-Kann for the starting punter job.

At running back, Demetris Murray and Marcus Shaw remain listed as co-starters; same for the neck-and-neck backup QB job, which has redshirt freshman Matt Floyd "or" junior Bobby Eveld behind senior B.J. Daniels; at cornerback, senior George Baker is still ahead of his top challenger, redshirt freshman Kenneth Durden.

The previous depth chart had five true freshmen listed, but now only two remain -- tight end Sean Price and defensive end Eric Lee are both listed as backups. Others who were previously listed, most notably receiver D'vario Montgomery, are still expected to play this fall. And while the defense has exactly 22 players on its side of the two-deep, the offense still has seven "or" spots with jobs to close to declare one ahead of another.

QB: B.J. Daniels, Matt Floyd/Bobby Eveld

RB: Demetris Murray/Marcus Shaw, Lindsey Lamar/Willie Davis

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
