Does anyone think it make sense to redshirt Gunsby this year, since we have no chance of winning the Big East this year, start taking snaps as a Sophomore, and have him groomed to replace BJ in about three years as a Jr. That should give him lots of time to really understand the offense and grow as a team leader by then. I thought that was the Plan for BJ before MG went down. Why is that any different now?

We really lack depth at QB and if Daniels gets hurt, we would need him to step up and play.  I also think that if we wanted to land seriously talented QB recruits, redshirting Gunsby would tell recruits that "he's our guy."  Gunsby could be a great QB, but I wouldn't go so far as to say "he's our guy."

AUGUST 19, 2010

Here it is: USF football's new depth chart

After days of waiting, here's the newly updated USF football depth chart, which coach Skip Holtz was nice enough to run through after getting off the bus back on campus after two weeks in Vero Beach. It reflects the current depth chart right now, so injured lineman Mark Popek isn't on there, nor is linebacker Sam Barrington, who has missed three days of practices because of legal issues in Tampa. Cornerback Quenton Washington isn't listed as a starter, but that's in part because he's missed time in the past week with injury.

OFFENSE

QB  B.J. Daniels    Eveld/Gunsby

RB  Mo Plancher    Demetris Murray

FB  Richard Kelly    Jeff Hawkins

TE  Kevin Gidrey  Andrew Ketchel

TE/WR (A)  Andreas Shields    Isaac Virgin

WR  Dontavia Bogan    T. J. Knowles

WR  Evan Landi    Faron Hornes

WR  Lindsey Lamar    Marc/Miller

LT  Jamar Bass    Damien Edwards

LG  Jeremiah Warren    John McGhin

C  Sampson Genus    Kevin McCaskill

RG  Chaz Hine    Danous Estenor

RT  Jake Sims    Quinterrious Eatmon

DEFENSE

DE  Craig Marshall    Ryne Giddins

DT  Cory Grissom    Keith McCaskill

NT  Terrell McClain    Hill/Sager

DE  David Bedford    Forte/Hampton

SLB  Jacquian Williams    Donte Spires

MLB  Mike Lanaris    Armando Sanchez

WLB  Sabbath Joseph    Lattimore/Weatherspoon

CB  Mistral Raymond    Quenton Washington

SS  Jerrell Young    JaQuez Jenkins

FS  Jon Lejiste    Mark Joyce

CB  Kayvon Webster    Baker/Mitchell

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK  Maikon Bonani/Eric Schwartz (even)

P  Justin Brockhaus-Kann    Chris Veron

LS  Mike Walsh

There you have it. Some true freshmen included as top backups -- Mark Joyce and Terrence Mitchell in the secondary, Quinterrious Eatmon at tackle, and Bobby Eveld and Jamius Gunsby vying to be the top backup at quarterback. You'll notice there are 13 spots on the offensive depth chart, but that's how Holtz laid it out -- obviously the "A" position (a hybrid TE/WR spot) could be dropped, and the FB and TE slots could be merged, since the two spots are largely interchangeable.

The kicking job was the only spot where Holtz wouldn't single out a starter -- in spots where two players are even, I've put the two players in alphabetical order, so don't read too much into that.

uhhhhhhh, bump?  Been waiting on this all week and no comments?

Some True Frosh in there...Joyce?  I need to look him up, don't know anything about him.

Shields over Virgin?  I guess that's unexpected due to the practice reports we've been reading.

Its nice to see Giddens in there.  Some big playing time backing up Marshall, especially with the way we rotate the line.

Jacquian in there as the starter.  Could be a fast linebacking core!

IMO, Joyce is the sleeper of this recruiting class. The guy is a BEAST. He's a tremendous track star in the hurdles. He's going to have a great highlight package by the time he's done.

Nothing really surprising.  Mainly because we've been getting real practice reports.

I think Holtz forgot to mention one freshman in this interview.

FRESHMAN IMPACT: During USF’s stay in Vero Beach, the Bulls gave the true freshmen plenty of reps to fully gauge their potential to play a role on this year’s team.

Holtz mentioned that five of the freshmen – OL Quinterrius Eatmon, DB Mark Joyce, RB Marcus Shaw, CB Terrence Mitchell and QB Bobby Eveld – have improved significantly since camp started.

“Those five guys all have a chance to turn and be in our two-deep,’’ Holtz said. “That’s a lot of freshmen that are all of a sudden in the mix

Not too many surprises especialy with the amount of practice reports coming from greg and scott. Andres over Virgin is pretty interesting especially with how the coaches have been talking about Virgin. The biggest shocker to me is not seeing Sam Barrington on there. I expected him to be lined up second behind Lanaris but I guess the coaches are sending him a message to get his act together by not putting him in the 2 deep. Hopefully his shoulde feels better by the next scrimmage.
