Greg put up an an entry with more "details" on the scrimmage. Makes for interesting reading.

I'm just glad we seem to now have found a back-up QB with Gunsby.

Holtz is supposed to release his depth chart tomorrow afternoon.

Most other teams are also working out the kinks at the moment. The scrimmage allows the coach to concentrate on those things that need to be fixed and the players who will be in the mix.

Holtz, Bulls seek to crank up offense

By Phil Neary

Tribune correspondent

VERO BEACH – After evaluating film of USF’s first scrimmage, Bulls coach Skip Holtz offered a bit of praise for the offense on Sunday despite its sluggish showing on Saturday.

“I thought the offensive line did some positive things,’’ Holtz said following Sunday afternoon’s practice. “Our defense is throwing a lot at us. They’re twisting, blitzing, and moving, not really staying stagnant. The defense knows where they’re going.’’

Holtz said quarterback B.J. Daniels’ inconsistent day was a result of many things, including dropped passes and missed reads. Holtz and Daniels had a long talk after the scrimmage to discuss some of the miscues.

USF spent much of Sunday’s practice working on the passing game.

“We just have to go back to the drawing board,’’ Holtz said. “We’re not going to re-invent the wheel, not throw everything out we’re doing. B.J. had a bad day and he was frustrated. He made some great reads and then maybe overthrew it. And then he’d turn and maybe miss a read. And then he’d turn and make a read and it’d be dropped.’’

The Bulls are scheduled to hold their second scrimmage of camp on Saturday in Tampa, and much of this week will be spent on trying to get the offense up to speed with the defense.

“The defense is ahead of the offense, probably as they are all over the country,’’ Holtz said. “Offenses are trying to get in the rhythm, get the right read and especially when you’re dealing with a couple young quarterbacks in a new system, you’re going to have some of these growing pains.’’

I knew Gunsby would push BJ (he is Holtz' guy), but not this early. I was thinking next year or year after. This true qb competition could get us to see the best qb ever at USF (no offense to Grothe or Blackwell). When was the last time we had a qb controversy in these here parts. No, Matt's freshman year doesn't count. That was not a controversy, that was a travesty. Whenever a coach says they are dead even right now, you have to go with the younger guy. The senior is not going to improve much more.

Would rather have all the mistakes come out now than 9/4

I don't think that there's anyway Gunsby can truly push BJ this year unless BJ gets nicked up. But I was at the scrimmage and if you didn't know better you would've thought Gunsby was our starter. 11-17 65% completion rate for 169 yards and the kid CAN tote the rock too! Stands tall behind the line, steps up into the pocket to buy more time, zero happy feet syndrome, shakes off arm tacklers, keeps his eyes down field the entire time, and has a good looking pass. His deep ball has a little more air under it than BJ's but, 58 yards through the air is impressive.

If BJ doesn't show alot of improvement in his decision making this year and gets happy feet before going through all of his check downs you may see Hotz make a change. I trust that Holtz will put the best guy on the field. I think we'll see alot of Gunsby this year with BJ out wide occasionally. I still say BJ needs to be in a Harvin type roll here because few people in college football have BJs elusivness. The guy is unreal in space. You should've seen the juke he put on Giddens to get to the corner. He rolled out to the right and then Giddens came off the edge right at him and BJ slowed down to jog then did a little hop in the air which made Giddens slow for just a second waiting for the change of direction from BJ. Then BJ just turned it on and got around him.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.  Saturday was an early camp scrimmage.  Let's not pretend that Gunsby was playing against Florida in a midseason game.  Gunsby won't begin to threaten Daniels anytime soon.

i don't know but it concerns me that BJ is still having problems with screen passes.  Lack of touch ?  BJ may not be the best QB when under center.  No question he is dynamic when on the move.  I guess Holtz will adjust his play calling to BJs skill set.
