Not everyone makes Florida 100 list

Bill Buchalter

December 19, 2004

Today, the Orlando Sentinel unveils its updated list of the state's top 100 recruits.

To be honest, as with any list, it should be met with skepticism.

All recruiting lists are opinions. Three or four years from now, we will have learned how valid those opinions are.

And don't forget that there's a difference between recruiting lists and high school all-star teams. For example, Alabama's "Mr. Football" this year is QB Jarod Bryant of Hoover. He's 5 feet 11 and 185 pounds and considered too small to be a big-time prospect. But he is a great high school player.

The only thing you can take from this or any other list is that all the players are good, but who will emerge at the next level will be the ones who work the hardest, stay injury-free and respond to coaching.

Christmas with a kick

Lyman K Mike Benzer committed to USF on Wednesday after a phone call from Bulls Coach Jim Leavitt.

Benzer, Gonzalez Tate's Graham Gano (FSU commitment) and Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas' Joe Surgan (Duke) are the consensus choices as Florida's top three high school kickers.

Around the state

What a week for Miami.

OLs Reginald Youngblood (6-5/305) of Houston Washington and A.J. Trump (6-4/290) of Clearwater Central Catholic, the best lineman in Texas and one of Florida's top 10 lineman, respectively, committed to the 'Canes.

So did LBs Eric Houston (6-2/220) of Miami Coral Reef and Darryl Sharpton (6-1/215) of Coral Gables plus coveted Spencer Adkins (6-0/225) of Naples.

In addition, two all-star defensive linemen who signed a year ago are back in the fold. Antonio Dixon (6-5/310), who attended Milford (Conn.) Prep this year after going to Miami Washington, will enroll in January or August, pending receipt of a qualifying test score. Former Oak Ridge standout Joe Joseph (6-4/280) earned a qualifying test score and will enroll in January.

UM also is awaiting word from LB Antonio Clay (6-1/207 of Jeffersonville (Ga.) Twigg Co., who is picking between UM and FSU.

The Seminoles wanted DE Averell Spicer (6-2/260) of Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.), but he picked USC over FSU. And Trump took the 'Canes over FSU and Notre Dame.

ATH Derrick Williams (6-0/193) of Greenbelt (Md.) Roosevelt, ranked the nation's No. 1-prospect by some analysts, has Florida in his final five schools. Joining the Gators are Penn State, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas. FSU had been in the running.

FSU did get some good news. Miami Coral Reef DB Dorian Munroe (6-0/180) became the 'Noles' ninth commitment. And Madison County Coach Frankie Carroll reports that star LB Eugene Hayes (6-2/210) has narrowed his choices to Tennessee and FSU. And Madison Co. TE Charles Graham (6-3/230) is leaning to the 'Noles.

USF received a commitment from ATH Taurus Johnson (6-0/175) of Cape Coral.

DB Reggie Nelson (6-1/200) of Coffeyville (Kan.) CC, a former Palm Bay star, visited FSU last weekend and joins touted QB Josh Portis (6-3/195) of Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft this weekend at Florida. Portis previously had committed to Utah. Nelson, who signed with the Gators out of high school, has said he will choose between UF and FSU.

Marquis Carpenter (5-11/180), Nelson's secondary teammate at Palm Bay and an all-Jayhawk Conference corner at Coffeyville, signed with Texas A&M. He had been offered by UCF.

Newest assistant coach at Florida is Doc Holliday, who will coach receivers. Holliday's forte is recruiting South Florida, where he has enjoyed a long successful run while working both for West Virginia and North Carolina State.
