looks like espn saw its advertising money about to be lost to conference networks, so they are stepping in.

Truthfully, this is more about losing to Fox.

Remember, Fox was bidding against them for the ACC - which is what drove up the ACC's #s.  Fox is being more aggressive, my guess is they want to have more than just Fox Sports Net - but also have college football on Fox (especially now they lost the BCS to ESPN).

Imagine Texas-Oklahoma on fox for the next 15 years.... ESPN shuddered at that one.

If all this settles down and the conferences stay as is for now i can see the BE adding memphis to become the 9th football member.

While I am 100% with you on Memphis I am not sure how the non-football playing members would like it.

My guess is that Fox did for the Pac 10... but wanted the Pac 16 network too... Texas wants their own network, of course, and now it seems they can get the $$ and their own network while staying in the Big 12.

You're not looking at all the factors involved here. You'd add a very good basketball program, you'd get an every year tie in to the Liberty Bowl, and have millions coming in annual in advertising money.

if texas does stay, I will forever believe they made the first overtures to the pac10 in order to get a bigger slice of big12 pie.

still think texas goes to pac10 and takes TT, TAM, OU, OSU with them.

but there are multiple layers of subterfuge here.
