For the boys, Hillsborough won its fourth straight region title. Terrence Mitchell won his two signature events, the long jump and triple jump. But he tweaked his hamstring before the 400 and his status is uncertain for next week's state meet, Terriers coach Joey Sipp said.  :(

Region track: Terriers boys take crown

By BILL WARD

PUNTA GORDA - There were plenty of performances Hillsborough coach Joe Sipp could point to for the reason his Terriers edged host Charlotte 87-85.5 for first place in Thursday's Class 3A-Region 3 meet.

But at the end of the day, it was hard not to look back at the gutsy performance of his star athlete, Terrence Mitchell. After grabbing first place in both the long jump (23 feet, 4.25 inches) and triple jump (47-0.5), Mitchell strained a hamstring during qualifying for the 100-meter dash. A little more than two hours later, Mitchell somehow took third in the event's final to score six more crucial points.

"He told me before the race, 'Coach, I'm OK, I'm just worried about stopping,'" Sipp said. "I said, 'Don't worry about stopping. You just keep running like Usain Bolt does.'"

Congrats also to Mark Joyce who won his region in the 110m hurdles.  ;D

Mark ran a 14.37 in the 110H at FHSAA 4A Region 1, placing first in the prelims.

"I ran faster in my prelims time, actually. I was two-hundredths off of my (personal record) of 14.35 (seconds), so I'm going to try and hit that at state," Joyce said. "I haven't lost in this race (this season) and I didn't want here to be the first time that I lost."

Strained hammies are no joke. T-Rex probably won't do too well next week.

I feel good about Joyce and Mitchell coming in and competing for a starting spot in the secondary. Those guys are a grown men.

T-Rex's hamstring still 'a little sore'

Posted on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 9:07 p.m.

By Joey Knight

Four days before the Class 3A state track meet, the status of Hillsborough state title aspirant Terrence Mitchell remains unclear.

Mitchell, who has qualified for the meet in three events, tweaked his right hamstring during the 100-meter preliminaries at Thursday's Region 3 meet and still was treating it Monday.

Mitchell, who still managed a third-place finish in the 100 finals, was a state title favorite before the injury.

"After the weekend it is still a little sore and tight," Terriers coach Joe Sipp said via text message Monday evening. "But we are going to keep working on him for the rest of the week and see how he feels on Friday."

In addition to T-Rex (100m, LJ and TJ) and Mark Joyce (100m hurdles), Tiger Powell (discus) and 2011 USF verbal Alex mutt (LJ and 4 x 400 relay) will be competing for a state championship.

Mitchell takes lead in state long jump; Walton third

Posted May 07, 2010 by Bill Ward

Updated May 07, 2010 at 03:06 PM

Hillsborough senior Terrence Mitchell has taken the lead in the Class 3A state long jump with his preliminary round mark of 23 feet, 3 inches. The second best performance of the prelims was 22-10, turned in by Mariner’s Andrew Dukas and Mitchell’s own teammate, Carlton Walton.

Initially, Walton went 21-3 in the qualifying round and did not reach the finals. But when it was learned officials were marking jumps off the wrong board, all 16 competitors were given one more attempt. Walton made the most of that opportunity to produce his 22-10 and move into the finals. Walton is in third with the same mark as Dukas because Dukas has the better second-best jump.

Hillsborough has already picked up two points just minutes ago with a seventh-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay with a season-best time of 8 minutes, 3 seconds.

Stay tuned to TBO.com for updates on the efforts of local athletes from the meet

Mitchell takes gold in state long jump; Walton bronze

Hillsborough senior Terrence Mitchell has won the Class 3A state long jump with his preliminary round mark of 23 feet, 3 inches. The second best performance of the prelims was 22-10, turned in by Mariner’s Andrew Dukas and Mitchell’s own teammate, Carlton Walton. Dukas improved in the finals to 22-11 while Walton remained at 22-10 to earn the bronze medal.

“To get these points early is huge,†said Terriers coach Joe Sipp. “Carlton came in seeded ninth and to take third is a big plus. And I’m just so proud of Terrence. He’s been through so much and weathered so many storms. He’s finally got that state title.â€

Mitchell was second in both the long and triple jump at last year’s 3A state finals.

Hillsborough has already picked up two points just minutes ago with a seventh-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay with a season-best time of 8 minutes, 3 seconds. That gives Hillsborough the team lead with 18 points. Charlotte is in second with 12 points. Miami Belen Jesuit is the team favorite in the boys finals.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
