Men's Bball Recruiting

Did a bit of hunting, etc., and here's what I have uncovered.

Recruiting from last year

All of our signed players got 2 stars, except for Jones, who got 3 stars.

---Now, it looks like we have lost 2 of the 5 -Mobley, and now maybe Waters.

Interestingly enough, Diarra was a 4 star recruit from 2 years ago...

Recruting for this year

Cann and Howard are both 3 stars.  Mattis -none. But Cann looks like a sure winner; a lot of people wanted him. Let's see how his knee holds up and how he plays this year.

As for the nation's 150 unsigned players, for both high school and JUCO, it does not look good right now. We do not appear to be in any major hunts.

Question: What recruiting surprises will Coach Mac and Co. offer us this year?

Basketbull....you have to remember Coach Mac is very quiet regarding recruiting.  You will have a hard time finding players we are involved with.

Diarra stars can probably be attributed to a certain coach hyping him.

Mattis hasn't been rated this year yet so he has no stars but I wouldn't concern yourself with the star system.

Cann was a top 30 national prospect before the knee injury and Howard was a top 50 prospect before prep school.

I can tell you we are talking to a few top 150 guys from the Northeast and one from the southwest.

Kids who are juniors right now....we are talking to 5 or 6 top 50 kids.

Signed recruit: JUCO McHugh Mattis

mattis_web.jpg

Height / Weight: 6-6 / 180 Position:G

McHugh has great expectations after a successful freshman year where he was a member of the All Suncoast Second Team, and First Team All Suncoast Freshman Team in 2003-04.  Last year, we talked about “Unlimited Potentialâ€Â, this year he must display it. One of the best in the country at the small forward position, McHugh is a star in the making. His skill level is second to none.  He can score in transition, take you off the dribble and deliver in the post.  What a talent!  A High Major Player who can get better with added strength and muscle…

for those of you that think he is very small for his size... think about the size altron was, and he was successful for us.  Tron was probably 6-8, 190 at best... mchugh is 6-6 180... fairly similar is build

Stars on a recruiting website don't mean a whole lot.

The top 30 are a cut above, but anything else is usually hype.

No USF player will get above 3 stars until the Bulls show they belong in the Big East and get some love from the national media.

Question: What recruiting surprises will Coach Mac and Co. offer us this year?

A lot depends on how much we improve. If recruits believe we are on the right track, I think there will be a marked interest by ranked recruits to play for USF.

As bad as we were last year, we still were in the hunt for some big players who signed in the early perid.

It's not easy for a top player to choose USF when all the experts predict we will be in the bottom of C-USA this year and say it will only get worse for us in the Big East.

If we can have just a respectable year and win our share of games against a few good teams, I think there will be a marked improvement in recruiting.

We need a Larry Bird or David Robinson type guy.  They didn't need the glamor of playing for an elite program and loved the game and both were class people.  Both made their team better and took them deep into the NCAAs.

That would be nice, but that is absurd to think we can get a player of that caliber to come here.  bird went to a small school, but today's game is much different than back then.

The admiral went to the Navy, that is a special circumstance which we will never see fall in our favor.
