WCCP in Clemson just made a reference to Spurrier having interest due to the availability of golf and the opportunity to coach his son.

I didn't realize our position was open (someone better tell Leavitt), and I know this is the same rumour we've been hearing all over, but it's being repeated in some unique places.

As long as Spurrier is alive rumors will abound regarding "he's interested in [insert your favorite school here]! Because [insert whatever lame reason you can come up with...good golf tees, junior wants to play football, etc.].

That may be true, but for some reason almost all rumors only mention a handfull of teams:  Texas, UF, USC and USF.  The odd thing with USF continually being mentioned is that at no point has there been rumors of CJL leaving or being bought out.

This is all a result of Joey "the Hack" Henderson's column.

He's also being mentioned for the vacancy at the University of Scotland at Royal Troon ..........

Well, when Spurrier takes the time to come to RayJay to watch a USF football game and his son wants to play for us, it's inevitable that some sports writers would begin to draw their own conclusions, even if the writer of the original article said it was merely a personal visit:

Flashback:

USF Bulls

Spurrier (yes, that Spurrier) watches USF

By GREG AUMAN, Times Staff Writer

Published October 17, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAMPA - It's the stuff rumors are made of, but Steve Spurrier was at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday only as a father.

His son, Scotty, a senior at Loudoun County High in Leesburg, Va., made a recruiting visit with his parents and could call USF home next fall.

"I hope he comes here," said the former Gators and Redskins coach who watched from a luxury box.

"Here's where he ought to be, even if it's as a walk-on. But he's going to make his own decision."

Scotty Spurrier, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound defensive back who scored a touchdown Friday, was a good-luck charm last weekend during a visit to East Carolina, which ended a nine-game losing streak with a win against Tulane.

In addition to USF, Spurrier is considering ECU, where former Gators quarterback Noah Brindise is the offensive coordinator, and Marshall, where coach Bob Pruett is a former defensive coordinator under Spurrier.

Jerri Spurrier talked before the game with USF assistant coach Carl Franks, a longtime Spurrier assistant who played under him with the USFL's Tampa Bay Bandits.

Her son likely won't make a decision until he visits Marshall, but Scotty said he's a huge USF fan and watches every game he can on DirecTV.

When inclement weather bumped Loudoun County's game to a Saturday earlier this season, Spurrier said he was upset he couldn't watch the Bulls live.

Remember, Spurrier coached in Tampa BEFORE he coached in Gainesville (See USFL - Bandits, Tampa Bay ). He also played for the Tampa Bay Buccanneers.  It should be no surprise that Spurrier might be interested in USF... (Peter King spelled out three reasons - Scotty, Big East, Golf).  He does have ties to this community.

Moreover, Spurrier is a "rock star" -- by that I mean he is a commodity that is known across the country.  He could bring new interest from the casual fans, especially disgruntled Florida fans that are not UF alumni... Also, UF was fair to middling before him, and he turned the program around.   He might enjoy the challenge of taking a decent team and making them great.

Of course, it's not all wine and roses with Spurrier.  His ego barely fits in Raymond James stadium and he hates to recruit.  With UF, he didn't have to - because athletes want to play at UF.  USF is not at that level yet, so he would actually have to work -- if he has the ethic for it.  (He certainly doesn't match CJL's work ethic, I doubt the old ballcoach has spent a night on a cot in the office after watching game film until 4:00am.)

Now, let's look at the rumors other than USF.

UF: Spurrier has publicly said he is not interested.  Perhaps because Foley is still there.

UNC: The University of North Carolina is probably out for two reasons, 1) Because they beat Miami this year; 2) Because of his loyalties to Duke - if he coaches in the ACC, it certainly won't be in the state of North Carolina.

UT: The University of Texas may be out, because Mack Brown keeps the Longhorns in the Top 10 year-in-and-year-out.  Just because he hasn't beat OU, doesn't mean he won't next year. (OU has had some Heisman caliber QB's recently, that won't last forever).

USC: South Carolina, as far as I know, still has a Hall of Fame coach in Lou Holtz.  It's a bit odd to talk about a school that has a coach that hasn't said he is leaving ;-) .  Besides, Lou has the 'Cocks back in a bowl game this year.

All this being said...

Jim Leavitt Deserves To Stay

If I had to choose between Leavitt and Spurrier, I'll take Leavitt any day.

Go Bulls! Beat Cincy

I do remember hearing, right after Spurrier made it clear that he was not going to UF, that IF he were going to coach it would be at the college level somewhere is southern part of Florida.

Is Miami looking for a coach? :-/

Spurrier said he would prefer to coach in the south which could mean So Carolina, Texas, etc.  You can bet that Spurrier would coach in the north if the right job opened up like Notre Dame or Ohio St.
