So how come the score wasn't on the ticker?  I watched ESPN last night, Headline News this morning, they showed NCAA women's scores but no USF.

WWW,

I believe they only show women's scores if they are in the TOP25.

Duke & South Florida Set To Battle Sunday...

The sixth-ranked Duke women's basketball team will take on South Florida in the second round of the Sportsview.tv WNIT on Sunday in Cameron Indoor Stadium at 2:00 p.m.

The winner of the contest will advance to the semifinals on Nov. 17 against the winner of the 11th-ranked Notre Dame versus Nebraska contest.

Noting The Blue Devils...

Monique Currie has been named one of the top-five wing players in the nation by ESPN.com ... Duke returns seven letterwinners and three starters off last year's 30-4 squad ... the Blue Devils boast as roster of nine eligible players to start the season as junior Lindsey Harding is suspended indefinitely and Emily Waner has to sit out this season after transferring from Colorado.

A Look At South Florida...

South Florida is coming off a 70-62 victory at Middle Tennessee State on Friday. The Bulls were led by Jessica Dickson with 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Chanae Early (12) and Rachael Sheats (10) each scored double-figures. South Florida came from four points down at the end of the first half (36-32) to post the victory.

The Bulls return all five starters off last years 14-15 team that finished eighth in Conference USA. Head Coach Stephany Smith is in her eighth year as head coach of South Florida.

The Series With South Florida...

Duke and South Florida have met only once in the history of the two programs. The meeting came back on Dec. 22, 1990 in Tampa, Fla. Duke picked up a 78-62 victory in the contest.

In the game, the Blue Devils were led by Sue Harnett with 29 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Traci Williams added 22 points and nine rebounds, while Monika Kost collected 13 points and eight boards. Duke led 40-37 at the end of the first half and shot 48.4 percent from the field for the game.

The Injury Report... For the most part, the 2004 preseason has been like night and day for the Blue Devils as far as injuries. Last season, Duke was faced with a preseason that included almost every player sidelined with injuries. Heading into the South Florida contest on Sunday, Wynter Whitley continues to nurse an ankle injury and is doubtful.

The Last Time Out...

Led by 20 points from Mistie Williams and Monique Currie, the sixth-ranked Duke women's basketball team opened the 2004-05 campaign with an 89-69 victory over Davidson to advance to the second round of the Sportsview.tv WNIT in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Duke led 40-32 at the end of the first half and was led by five players with double-figure points--Jessica Foley (10), Wanisha Smith (14) and Allison Bales (13). Freshman Chante Black had nine points, 14 rebounds and four blocks on the night. The 14 rebounds is tied for the third-most by a freshman at Duke in a single game.

Monique Currie Approaching Milestone...

Junior Monique Currie is approaching a milestone as she is in her third year with the program. A native of Washington, D.C., Currie owns 939 career points and needs only 61 more to become the 18th Duke player to notch 1,000 points in her career. She has played in 70 career games and has a scoring average of 13.4.

In the season opener, Currie had 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. It marked the first time since her freshman season Currie has scored 20 or more points. Overall, she has scored 20 or more points eight times in her career.

Season Openers...

In season openers, Duke is 22-8 overall. Since Coach G arrived in 1992, Duke is 11-2 with the losses coming to third-ranked Connecticut in 1998-99 and third-ranked Texas in 2003-04.

Black Nets Rare Freshman Start...

Only seven Duke women's basketball players under Gail Goestenkors have started their first collegiate game, and you can now chalk Chante Black on the list, after starting against Davidson on Friday. Other players to start their first game under Goestenkors include Wynter Whitley, Alana Beard, Iciss Tillis, Missy West, Nazrawit Medhanie and Alison Day. Overall, 16 different Duke players have started their first game since the program was started in 1975.

Freshmen Shine In Opener...

Duke freshmen Chante Black and Wanisha Smith each had excellent season-openers on Friday against Davidson. Black, who missed most of the first half after bumping heads with Jessica Foley, scored nine points, had 14 rebounds and four blocks in only 23 minutes, while Smith scored 14 points, had five rebounds, five assists and three steals in 31 minutes.

The 14 rebounds by Black is tied for the third-best single game output by a freshman at Duke. Only Chris Moreland as pulled down 14 or more rebounds during her freshman year in 1985. Black played only 23 minutes in the contest because she missed most of the first half due to receiving 11 stitches in her forehead.

Post Players Led Duke In Victory...

Duke's post players Mistie Williams (20), Alison Bales (13) and Chante Black (9) scored 42 of Duke's 89 points on Friday against Davidson. The trio hit 18 of 26 from the field and were a force for the Blue Devils. Bales, a sophomore from Dayton, Ohio, set a new career high with 13 points on the night. It broke her previous high of 11 last season against Virginia. Bales also finished with four blocks on the evening. Williams posted 20 points for the fourth time in her career.

Duke women recover from another slow start

By NOLAN HAYES : The Herald-Sun

nhayes@heraldsun.com

Nov 14, 2004 : 11:43 pm ET

The players were frustrated, and the crowd was restless. But there was no panic in the building.

Two days after a lackluster season-opening win over Davidson, the Duke women's basketball team trailed 10-2 five minutes into its game against South Florida.

But the No. 6 Blue Devils went exclusively to a zone defense and shut down the smallish, speedy Bulls in an 82-50 victory Sunday afternoon in the second round of the WNIT at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Duke (2-0) visits No. 10 Notre Dame, 73-57 winner over Nebraska, on Wednesday in the semifinals.

Duke (2-0) limited South Florida to 30-percent shooting in the first half, and somehow the Bulls shot even worse in the second. South Florida finished the game just 17 of 66 from the floor (25.8 percent), including 2-for-19 from 3-point range.

The Blue Devils, meanwhile, hit 46.7 percent of their shots as they turned a two-point game with five minutes to go in the first half into a laugher.

Freshman point guard Wanisha Smith, making the first start of her career, led the way with a game-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Forward Monique Currie had 17 points and nine rebounds, guard Jessica Foley scored 12 points, and forward Mistie Williams tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman center Chante Black fought through foul trouble to score six points and grab 13 rebounds in 20 minutes before twisting her right ankle with 3:04 left in the game.

The Blue Devils were determined to start well after struggling early against Davidson, but they failed in their attempt.

"That was a little bit disappointing," said Foley, who led Duke with four steals. "We practiced hard [saturday], and we were really disappointed with the way we played against Davidson. It would have been nice to come straight out and stamp our authority on the game early."

Smith, who admitted to being nervous in her new starting role, was part of Duke's problem in the early going. She had two turnovers and a foul before the game was three minutes old, earning herself a seat on the bench as South Florida offset Duke's opening basket with a 10-0 run.

But Smith played much better when she returned, jump-starting Duke's transition game and finishing with strong layups on fast breaks.

"I was just trying to be aggressive with the ball and attack their defense," said Smith, who had three assists and six turnovers. "It kind of opened up for me. I got some two-on-ones and just kind of took it."

The Bulls (1-1) got no such easy looks at the basket. South Florida led 15-12 with 11:30 remaining in the first half but had more turnovers (eight) than points (six) the rest of the half. The Bulls shot 3-for-18 during that span as Duke closed the half on a 21-6 run.

"They played man-to-man probably four or five minutes out of a 40-minute game," South Florida coach Jose Fernandez said. "They zoned us and used their size to their advantage. They really altered a lot of our shots, especially from the baseline and the high post."

South Florida cut Duke's lead to nine early in the second half, but the Blue Devils rolled from that point. Duke ripped off a 19-4 run, with Currie scoring nine points to lead the charge, and the game was over.

"In the second half," Fernandez said, "the game just got away from us."

Guard Anedra Gilmore led the Bulls with 14 points and shot a team-best 5-for-13 from the floor. Forward Jessica Dixon, who was the nation's leading freshman scorer last season, had 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting.

Despite their size disadvantage -- South Florida had just one true center in uniform -- the Bulls managed to grab 24 offensive rebounds. More amazingly, however, those 24 extra chances turned into only eight points.

It was that type of game for South Florida.

"The shots just didn't fall for us tonight," Dickson said. "If they would have fallen, we would have been in this game. I believe we would have been close."

NOTE -- Senior post player Wynter Whitley, who sat out the win over Davidson with a sore ankle, played eight minutes Sunday and received an injection after the game. Her status for Wednesday is questionable.

Devils' Smith scores 20 in first collegiate start

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOX SCORE | RECAP

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Freshman Wanisha Smith made a splash in her point guard debut, leading Duke with 20 points in an 82-50 win over South Florida in the Women's NIT second round on Sunday.

Mistie Williams had 10 points and 10 rebounds, Monique Currie added 17 points and Jessica Foley had 12 for Duke (2-0).

Smith made 4-of-7 first-half shots and had 11 points by halftime to pace Duke to a 33-21 lead. She went 4-for-5 in the second half, hitting her only 3-point try.

"I'm getting more comfortable out there every game," she said. "I was just trying to be aggressive with the ball and attack their defense, and things kind of opened up for me."

Smith earned her first start after scoring 14 points with five assists and three turnovers in Friday's win against Davidson. The Blue Devils played that game without point guard Lindsey Harding, who was suspended indefinitely early in the month by coach Gail Goestenkors for breaking unspecified team rules.

Smith's 34 points is the third best two-game start for a Duke first-year player, bettered only by Chris Moreland and Alana Beard, a pair of ACC players of the year.

Duke posted a 45-38 rebounding margin, led by Chante Black's game-high 13 boards.

Anedra Gilmore led South Florida (1-1) with 14 points. Jessica Dickson had 13 and Ezria Parsons added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

South Florida grabbed 24 offensive boards but managed just four baskets off second chances.

"Most times you give up 24 offensive rebounds, you're probably going to get out-shot," Goestenkors said. "Fortunately, they only shot 25 percent."

Dickson, the NCAA's top-scoring freshman last season, hit just 5-of-17 shots.

"Our zone neutralized their athleticism," Goestenkors said. "Obviously, we have to work on our rebounding."

Duke missed six of its first seven shots while South Florida took a 10-2 lead.

"We came out with a lot of confidence, then we dug a huge hole for ourselves," South Florida coach Jose Fernandez said. "You can't shoot this poorly against a team this good, or any team for that matter, and expect to win."

The Blue Devils hit their next four and finished the first half by going 11-for-22. South Florida scored just three baskets in the final 11:30 of the first half and went 4:48 into the second half before making a field goal

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
