Brad or Gary or Bob,

Could we get a separate board going or perhaps an archive so our more "creative" students would be able to use this kind of material at home b-ball games this year?  But this is great stuff.  It's not like there's a pattern with this guy or anything (Marcus Camby wearing a year's salary around his neck at the Final Four in '96).

Was there a burglary?

Police skeptical about Tigers' story

As John Calipari held a press conference Tuesday to discuss details involving the recent burglary of the apartment of some of his players, the Memphis Police Department was investigating every angle of the ordeal.

"One of the aspects we're looking at," said Billy Garrett, commander of the MPD Burglary unit, "is whether there was an actual burglary."

Sources with knowledge of the situation told The Commercial Appeal that police are skeptical because there was no forced entry into the on-campus apartment. Sources said the door was left unlocked or someone used a key.

Garrett added that the players -- Clyde Wade, Arthur Barclay, Rodney Carney and Joey Dorsey -- have acknowledged leaving a man in the apartment when they left Friday for Saturday's exhibition game.

Detectives are interviewing that unidentified person. Furthermore, the sources said, Wade has told authorities that he did not have his key while at FedExForum. He said he had loaned it to a relative.

"The greatest thing in all this is that the truth will always come out," Calipari said.

The gist of Calipari's press conference was to discuss the original police report, filed by Wade on Saturday night, that listed $40,000 worth of mink coats among the possessions missing.

By Monday afternoon, the report had been amended and minks removed. Instead, $3,600 worth of furs were listed as taken, all of which belonged to a girlfriend of Dorsey.

"There's no conspiracy," Calipari said. "The young man didn't know how much the coats were worth. The police were saying, 'How much was the stuff worth that was stolen out of your room?' He called the young lady and said, 'How much were these coats worth?' She said, 'Around $5,000.' He thought she meant per coat. So he does the arithmetic and says $40,000.

"She later finds out that those coats weren't worth $40,000," Calipari added. "She amended (the police report) herself, and goes back and says those coats were worth about $3,600."

The Memphis Police Department is still investigating.

Janice Dowell, who owns Motes Furs & Accessories on White Station, said Tuesday that detectives called earlier in the day to ask further questions about 18 full-length coats stolen from her store last month.

When made aware of this development, Calipari just sighed.

"They didn't have minks," he said. "They were ... fake furs."

The other point Calipari emphasized in his press conference was that it wasn't unreasonable for his players to own the type of clothes and jewelry that were reported stolen.

Asked how college students could afford $4,000 in custom-made shirts, Calipari explained how student-athletes benefit financially from the system.

The Tiger staff said a low-income family could get about $12,000 a year from Pell grants, meal money and a FedEx internship.

All of that, Calipari said, can be used as spending money.
