Big East schedule set at 13 games

By Bill Koch

Enquirer staff writer

The revamped Big East Conference will play a schedule of 16 league games in basketball next season when the University of Cincinnati joins it along with four other schools from Conference USA.

The league's athletic directors and presidents met Tuesday in Philadelphia and agreed to a 16-game schedule in which each school will play 13 of the other schools but will miss two schools every season.

"I'd rather play everybody," said UC coach Bob Huggins. "I think that's more equitable, but they've got to do whatever they think is best."

Each school will have three "mirror" schools that it will play on a home-and-home basis each year.

A source close to the Big East said that one of UC's mirror schools will be Louisville, a longtime Bearcats rival. Cincinnati's other two mirror schools have yet to be determined.

Twelve of the 16 teams will play in the conference tournament at Madison Square Garden.

In addition to Cincinnati and Louisville, Marquette, DePaul and South Florida will join the Big East next year.

Anybody want to venture a guess as to which three BE schools will be our "mirror" games each year?

Was Huggins sober when he made that statement? Or was he recruiting again?  :o ::)

If you have 16 games, and 15 schools to play, why not play all 15, and have 1 mirror game.

I agree with Huggins there.  I want to play everyone...

can you imagine if we end up not playing Cuse and UConn at all... we might win an extra game, but i can't wait to see them come to the dome, and with this scenario... we might not even see them here.

We'd play them the next year.  There are only three teams that you play every year.

Right, but each year there are 2 teams that you don't get to play at all.

Only that year.  You would play them the next season.  I like the three mirror schools idea.  It gives you a chance to build real rivalries.

schedule could look like this:

Away:  Pitt, ND, Rutgers, Cincy, L'ville, Seton Hall, Providence

home:  WVA, Marq, Dep, Vill, St John, Providence, Georgetown, Pitt, Rutgers

No Conn and No Cuse

they don't say there is going to be alternating teams that you don't play.  I hope that is the case... but if they don't make a rule for it... who knows.  We never played Tulane in football.

If I had to guess, I would say Louisville and Cincinnati are locks.  West Virginia and Georgetown are probably the closest.

I'd like to see it be Louisville, Cincinnati and West Virginia.

I'd like those 3 teams as well, but i bet it'll be more like

L'ville, Georgetown, WVU... 3 closest schools to us.

That's true, hopefully more info will come out.

I'd like to see something like this:

2005-2006

Home: Louisville, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Providence, St. Johns, Georgetown

Away:  Lousiville, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Seton Hall, Marquette, Depaul, Villanova, Rutgers

Conneticut, Syracuse

2006-2007

Home: Louisville, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Seton Hall, Marquette, Depaul, Villanova, Conneticut

Away:  Lousiville, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Providence, St. Johns, Syracuse

Georgetown, Rutgers

2007-2008

Home: Louisville, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Providence, Rutgers, Syracuse

Away:  Lousiville, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Seton Hall, Marquette, Depaul, Georgetown, Conneticut

Villanova, St. Johns

And so on

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
