Tenn. Tech Player Recovering

Posted: 10/14/2004 4:42:45 PM

The mother of a Tennessee Tech football player severely injured during a game last month says her son is recovering.

The mother of Tennessee Tech wide receiver Drew Hixon sent his teammates an update from Virginia where he is recovering from a blow to the head.

Hixon was in a medically induced coma for awhile. Now he is awake and going through rehab.

In the week since he got to the rehab center at the University of Virginia, Hixon has improved quickly.

He is going through speech therapy and is now able to breathe without a tube.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The road ahead toward recovery is a long one for Tennessee Tech senior Drew Hixon, but he seems to be making slow and steady progress, according to doctors and therapists.

About a week ago, Drew was moved from the hospital in Tampa, Fla., to a brain trauma facility at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, Va., which placed him closer to his family's home in the Washington, D.C. area. He had regained consciousness prior to the move and began his therapy while at St. Joseph's Hospital.

After one week in Virginia, Drew's mother, Rebecca, sent a brief update to Tech athletic trainer David Green to share with the team and everyone who has shown so much interest in Drew's condition.

Drew is working daily with Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT) and Speech Therapy.

During the past weekend, his parents, Stan and Rebecca, along with his sister and girlfriend, all spent time with Drew. His mother reports that Drew was very responsive to all his visitors.

A group from Tennessee Tech athletics went to Tampa on the Sunday before Drew was moved in order to visit with him and his family. That group included athletic trainer David Green, athletic director Mark Wilson, head football coach Mike Hennigan, and Drew's roommate and former teammate Anton Thomison.
