Did he commit or what? I have a feeling he might be leaning toward VT. By the way this is Zaronn Cann not our former all-world center Ales Chan.

I heard he gave a verbal to USF :(

I was really hoping for him. just look at the guys we're looking at in the next couple years. I think it proves that Beilein is looking to get more athletic. I just hope we can land a couple of these guys.

Cann Decides On USF

By ANWAR S. RICHARDSON arichardson@tampatrib.com

Published: Oct 7, 2004

BRANDON - After his basketball career nearly ended in January, Brandon High boys standout Zaronn Cann has received a four- year extension.

The senior verbally committed to play for the University of South Florida, making him the first Florida high school recruit for second- year coach Robert McCullum. He made that decision Wednesday after contemplating offers from Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

Verbal commitments are nonbinding until the early basketball signing period, which begins Nov. 10.

``Not knocking any other coach, but I just have more respect for Coach McCullum than any of the other coaches. There is just something about the relationship between Coach McCullum and I,'' Cann said.

Cann (6-foot-6, 240 pounds) is listed by rivals.com as a three-star recruit and one of the top five shooting guards in Florida. He averaged 18 points and 8.4 rebounds last season and has scored 1,043 points in three seasons.

He was highly recruited by Florida, Duke, North Carolina, Michigan and Florida State before he was injured in a game against Plant on Jan. 16. Trying to catch an alley-oop pass, Cann tore his anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and the lateral collateral ligament.

He underwent surgery and rehabilitation, but dropped off the radar of many college programs. He recently was cleared to play basketball this season and his doctor, David Leffers, said Cann's knee is back to normal.

Now Cann is looking forward to eventually helping a team that finished 7-20 last season.

``It's not going to be as hard as everybody thinks. He [McCullum] has brought in some junior-college players already and that is going to help out a lot,'' Cann said. ``Now going into the Big East, the first year might be kind of iffy, but we will develop a little bit more. Being in the Big East will give us more exposure and help with recruiting.''

Good News.  Finally a guy with some muscle.  If he has shooting guard touch then he will be a handful at 6-6 250.

Good grab.  Finally a "true" home town star coming to USF.  What's it been...8-9 yrs since Jesse Salters was on the Sun Dome's Court.  USF should always have a kid in the lineup from Pinellas, Hillsborough & Polk.  At least two outa the three counties.  They produce enuff talent.

Can someone explain basketball recruiting to me?  Like when can recruits sign LOIs?  Is this just a verbal? etc.

Yes SC, this is just a verbal.  Basketball has two signing periods.  The early period starts Nov. 10th and lasts for one week.  Cann will sign then.  Most of the really good talent signs in November, unless there are grade issues.  The second signing period is in April and lasts for about a month.

By the way BD, Jesse Salter signed with FSU and played there for one year before transfering HOME to become a Bull.  Just a point of clarification.

I'm glad Coach Mac kept Zaronn home.  I hope his knee is healthy.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
