UCF May Count As C-USA Foe

FLAG DAY: Without hesitation, USF's four senior captains agree the blame for the Bulls being the nation's most penalized team lies with the players.

"It's definitely been a problem, that's for sure,'' DT Lee Roy Selmon Jr. said. "You can't expect to be successful when you're having more than 100 yards [a game] in penalties.''

USF averages 12 penalties for 98 yards a game.

"We have to take it upon ourselves,'' FS Javan Camon said. "The coaches can tell us all they want, but it's up to us.''

C Alex Herron said it "all boils down to discipline.''

"The offensive line is having too many problems with holding calls and it's something Coach [Greg] Frey works with us on every single day. There's nothing more he can possibly do. I think it's just mental; we have to focus.''

Added OT Derrick Sarosi: "As an offensive lineman, anytime you get penalties, it's a lack of fundamentals. If we did what Coach Frey told us 100 percent of the time, we'd win every time.''

USF coach Jim Leavitt said his players "don't want to make a penalty or do the wrong thing. I tell them don't do it. Work your tail off and don't do anymore than that. If they're making too many penalties, I take them off the field.'' (Really? Example please.)

Herron said being benched is the best motivational tool.

Leavitt joked he had a way to solve USF's penalty problems. At least it sounded like a joke.

"If we didn't have to use officials, we wouldn't have any penalties,'' Leavitt said. ``But we have to play with officials. If they just wouldn't make any calls, we'd be fine. But they will call a game. We have to figure out a way not to do the things we're not supposed to.''
