Lake Gibson Finally Defeats Haines City

By MIKE AKINS

Ledger Correspondent

LAKELAND -- The Lake Gibson Braves played their best allaround game of the season to defeat Class 4A, District 8 rival Haines City 42-0 in front of 500 rain-soaked fans at Virgil Ramage Stadium Monday night

The Braves, who improve to 50 on the season, broke a threegame losing streak to the 1-4 Hornets.

Senior quarterback Matt Grothe accounted for six touchdowns, including four scoring tosses to lanky wide receiver Bobby Taylor.

"We were ready to play tonight," Lake Gibson coach Keith DeMyer said. "We had a very good week of practice."

The Brave offense gained nearly 500 yards with running back Issac Harris rushing for 110 yards to go along with Grothe's passing. The story of the game was the Brave defense, who pressured Hornet quarterback Theo Gray all night, sacking him four times and only allowing 114 yards of offense.

"I was very happy that we posted a shutout," Lake Gibson defensive coordinator Shannon Arnett said.

The Braves also added a safety as 10th-grade defensive lineman Leon Stewart sacked Gray in the end zone early in the second half to hike the score to 22-0.

The Braves started out slowly, and did not score the first touchdown until the first play of the second quarter as Grothe ran in from 3 yards out.

The Braves play at home on Friday night against Poinciana.
