Then....with 20 something seconds left and a time out we try to kick a field goal from the far left hashmarks instead of running the ball one more time to get more in the middle of the field for our already severely handicapped kicker and we keep the timeout in our pocket.   Doesn't make sense...

thought the same thing. if angle is a problem - then wouldnt you try to fix that for the kid? Or how bout you dont waste time and manage the clock so that you arent in that situation in the first place?! Doesnt make sense - and it makes even less sense that people at home seem to realize what gregory apparently does not! so confused...

While I don't really disagree with this thread, I find it interesting that M-A-B didn't start posting here again until USF started screwing up.

As long as I can remember, USF has had bad, if not horrid play calling.  Rod Smith, Gregory...At some point, you have to wonder if it's just coincidence that all of our OC's appear to be horrible, or if more blame falls on CJL than we like to admit.

Yep...it's the whole LOYAL TO A FAULT thing...just like his obsession with being loyal to Alvarado.

He refuses to go outside to hire coordinators.

He always wants to stay in-house whenever possible...even when MUCH BETTER CANDIDATES are available outside the program.

It's cost USF games in the past, and it will continue to cost them games in the future.

Not that this excuses the last four minutes, because it doesn't. But consider:

1. USF did not care about this game.

2. UCF cared very, very, very, very, VERY much.

3. Ford and Williams both missed the game.

You're kinda limited on the running plays you can call, unless you want to give Grothe 25 carries (not a good idea, especially with UCF cheap-shotting anyone in a white jersey). I mean how much of the offense do you think Plancher really knows? I think that was yet another reason that they finally started giving Kelly some carries. At least he was around last year and not rehabbing.

Worst call of the game was calling a pass when we're up 24-10 with under 4 left.  Grothe doesn't throw that pick, we run clock & make them use timeouts and at worst punt deep into their territory.

The problem is USF does not have that many run plays. Once you see the formation you know what coming.

Why are you guys harping on play calling when we put up over 500 yards of offense?  The offense is working fine.  They coaches need to work on situational play.

The only play calling I would question were the passes on the last 2 drives.  Inexcusable.  Gregory needs to be fired.  On the interception, if we run the ball, force them to call a timeout then punt, that last drive never has time to happen even if they score after the punt.  Just ridiculous.  We didn't need a first down, although it would have been nice.  Grothe has to take some of the blame for the pass, but it should have been a handoff or keeper in that situation.

Exactly ..... that game was well under control after halftime until we got a little sloppy towards the end and started THINKING the game was well under control and UCF took advantage of it ...

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
