Bulls Still On Schedule With Preparations

Published: Sep 28, 2004

TAMPA - Despite not arriving on campus until 1:30 p.m. Monday, South Florida has not lost any preparation time for Saturday's game against Southern Mississippi.

Hurricane Jeanne prevented the Bulls from returning home immediately after their 45-44 double-overtime win at TCU.

``The only thing we missed was the morning coaches' preparation, but we did that while we were in Texas,'' quarterbacks coach Rod Smith said. ``We did all kinds of Southern Miss preparation [sunday] night. So we're caught up. We're not behind.''

JULMISTE GEM: USF sophomore QB Pat Julmiste passed for the fourth-highest single-game total in school history when he threw for 324 yards against the Horned Frogs. Julmiste's total is behind that of Marquel Blackwell (360, 343) and Chad Barnhardt (331).

``By no means has he arrived, but he had a good game,'' Smith said. ``He finally was consistent, which is what we've been preaching. He's been showing that in practice, but we were waiting for him to do it in a game. The athletic ability is there, it's just a matter of him being consistent.''

ODDS AND ENDS: USF set school records for penalties (18) and yards penalized (164) against TCU. The Bulls rank last (117th) in Division I-A in penalties (12.7) and penalty yards (103) per game. ... OG Chris Carothers (ankle) was held out of practice, but OT Derrick Sarosi (knee) and DL Matt Groelinger (concussion) practiced and ``looked great,'' USF coach Jim Leavitt said.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
