That is eye-opening for me.  I have been thinking that MG was not doing near as well as last year.

Grothe's stats have been skewed due to dropped passes and turnovers.  But he has become more efficient and has made some BETTER eye-opening plays.

And the UCF game last year was when he REALLY started to get it going.  Maybe it happens again.

Remember our first 5 games from last year: McNeese, FIU,  @UCF, @Kansas, #23 Rutgers

I have to say that our schedule is much more difficult this year.

That is eye-opening for me.  I have been thinking that MG was not doing near as well as last year.

well the stats are relative...  Matt isn't a freshman anymore, and one would hope (expect?) his stats would have improved.

instead, they've declined ever so slightly...  so while they LOOK to be about equal at this point, relative to his growth as a player he could probably be doing better.

that said, his INT's are down, and the team's record is improved. that's the most important part of all.

also, the offensive scheme has been different. with the addition of new talent in the backfield (Ford and Taylor), the coaching staff has been trying to implement a more traditional game by keeping Grothe in the pocket and using his arms alot more than his legs, which at this point is against his nature as a player. it's cut down on his mistakes and probably spared him some of those nagging injuries from last year, but it's also cut down on some of that improvisation and risk-taking that led to big plays and big gains last year.  he just hasn't looked comfortable in the pocket.

i'd like to see him hit that happy medium of being productive but also less prone to mistakes, but despite his decreased productivity i still like where we're at now a whole lot better than where we were last year.  lol.

Hes done pretty much as good as last year but against much better competition through his first 5 this year.  He takes care of the ball better this year and his numbers would be much better than last year if our WR's hadn't dropped so many balls.  I would say im seeing a QB who makes better decisions and appears to be much more comfortable in the system.  If we can cut out the drops and get a RB to consistently around 100yds week in and week out we will put up some big numbers offensively, especially Matt.
