Alum offers a real bull to USF for mascot

Tampa, Florida – The college landscape is littered with them. School that use real animals as their mascot. The University of Texas has Bevo the Longhorn steer, The University of Colorado has Ralphie and buffalo and now John Massaro would like The University of South Florida to have Rocky the real life Brahman bull.

Massaro, who owns a number of Beef'O'Brady's restaurants in the Bay area originally made his offer to USF officials last year, but they declined. Now Massaro, who graduated from USF in 1989, is reiterating his offer.

John Massaro, USF Graduate:    “I think it would be exciting.”

Massaro doesn't want his bull to replace the school's current costumed mascot named Rocky the bull. Instead he thinks the 2 could compliment each other and really get USF fans excited at the school's sporting events.

A USF spokesperson tells Tampa Bay's 10 News at this time the school is “not considering” adding a live mascot. However, Massaro is not deterred and believes someday he will eventually see a real Brahman bull lead the USF bulls onto the football field.

Man, that sucks. I was looking forward to seeing that sometime this season.  Need OCS...

Cant wait for that OCS. I dont see why USF cant just bring the bull caged up to the game. At least have it sitting outside the stadium, so that the fans can see the bull before and after the game. At least that is better than nothing.

Yeah, I was pretty sure the plans for a live Bull were dead.  As for an OCS, go big or go home.  If we get one I doubt they'll make  a tiny one like UCF.  It would take more than a year to build. So, I imagine after the sell outs this year they'll begin talks about it.  If not this year then next if it continues.

Well, I don't see how an OCS would mean USF would get a bull... since the article quoted a USF source not a TSA or Bucs source saying that a bull is not even under consideration.

Until USF says "we want one but can't get one" then we can pretty much assume that OCS or RayJay doesn't matter.

I'm not sure what to think of having an actual live Bull at an event like this - is it really safe? I keep seeing that video of the bull jumping over a barrier and into the stands! I mean, I'm not sure it's gonna be good for attendance if Rocky goes off and starts goring little leaguers in the stands. Is this what USF is thinking too?

It would be cool if they could release the Bull behind the visiting team as they came onto the field .....  THEN you would see a real "Running of the Bulls" ala "Tamplona" .
