School board puts off acting on Hoover investigation

The Hoover (Ala.) school board postponed acting on an investigation into Hoover High athletics until at least the board's next meeting Oct. 10.

The probe, conducted by Birmingham attorney Sam Pointer Jr., involved possible grade changes and problem areas in the management and control of the Hoover football program.

Hoover was the Alabama state football 6A champion from 2000 to 2005 and is 3-1 this season.

"We're big enough here, and we've been on top for so long that we have detractors," said Hoover coach Rush Propst. "I've done no wrong, and I think nobody in our program has done wrong. … When it comes down to it, I don't think there's a lot to it."

The team got more attention when MTV chose Hoover's football program for the setting of its Two-A-Days reality show that followed the team through the 2005 and '06 seasons.

Since the investigation began, Hoover athletics director Jerry Browning stepped down, and Richard Bishop's contract as principal was not renewed.

If you read this can either one of you use your contacts and get a statement from Saban about this? I'm sure he would love the opportunity to tell the world how high Bama's standards. Nothing like a local HS scandal that gives you recruits every year to solidify your case.

Along those lines:

Hoover High counselors this spring sent a second, different transcript for football player Josh Chapman to the University of Alabama after the university's compliance office called to say the player was unexpectedly ineligible. The second transcript contained a grade change that made Chapman eligible, and was "an honest mistake," according to Richard Bishop, who has sued the school system after his dismissal as principal.

Retired federal judge Sam Pointer Jr., hired by the school system, is investigating the situation involving Chapman's grade change, as well as other allegations involving academics at Hoover High. Pointer is also looking into allegations of whether a teacher was pressured to give a certain grade to football player Kerry Murphy, another highly rated Alabama signee who failed to qualify academically this year and is attending prep school.
