thought this was a nice mention....

With the recent shake-up in the Top 10, I was curious about your thoughts on the "Best-Quarterback/Running-Back/Possibly-Wide-Receiver-For-a-Team-Contending-for-the-National Championship Trophy." Do you see any possible groundswell of support for a non-traditional candidate like LSU's defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey? As the hype for this award grows every year, so to, does the criticism. Personally I'd love to see a defensive player win the trophy for a change.

--DH, Belleville, Ill.

I first touted Dorsey's candidacy before the season even started, and since then, I think I've gained some insight into why it's so difficult for players like him to win. It would be one thing if, once the season began, we put the whole Heisman topic on the shelf and didn't revisit it until it came time to vote. You could compare a whole bunch of guys' bodies of work at a whole bunch of different positions and make a decision. But as you know, it doesn't work like that. We in the media have turned the Heisman into its own week-by-week race, just like the national title, and so far it's been nearly impossible for me to track Dorsey's season on a weekly basis simply because he does not produce the same kind of easily distinguishable statistics as an Andre Woodson or a Darren McFadden.

As far as I know, Dorsey (25 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss) is having another great season as the cog of the nation's top-rated defense, but only someone who's watched every play of every LSU game (and focused on the line of scrimmage, at that) would truly know what kind of impact he's having. If you're looking for a non-traditional candidate who is putting up identifiable and downright staggering statistics, look no further than South Florida defensive end George Selvie. In just four games (two of them against ranked opponents), the sophomore has 9.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss, both tops in the country. To put that in perspective, only 19 players had more sacks and only 15 had more TFLs over the entire 2006 season. If he keeps up this kind of pace, why shouldn't he be considered for most outstanding player?

I've been thinking that myself. Selvie is putting up some astronomical numbers. 9.5 sacks and 17 TFL is just obsurdly good.  Thanks for coming George.  Makes me wonder how big a loss Josh Joulmiste really was.  Selvie seems to have a good lineman corps around him and he's doing well. Very well.

If the Heisman trophy actually went to the legitimately best player and wasnt a popularity contest (see Troy smith last year), Selvie would have a great shot at it.

He may get the D-lineman of the year award, although I don't think he was nominated for that in the offseason. Dont know if that affects his chances

Is the record for sacks in a season still 24 set by Terrell Suggs? If so George might crush it if he can keep it up.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
