RUMOR: Fulmer is done

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This will be a somewhat Tennstud-esque post, so take it with whatever level of credibility you wish.

Was talking to a friend tonight who lives in Knoxville and is very close with a lot of the "players" in and around the program. What he says carries some pretty good weight with me, but I can't confirm any of it.

He says it was basically decided in the offseason that Fulmer was done at the end of this year unless he at least got to the SEC championship game. He said there have been preliminary, behind-the-scenes sort of talks with Jim Leavitt (USF). Word is that Leavitt has agreed in principal that he would like to come to Tennessee, and he's their guy if Fulmer is gone.

If you want to say this is ********, that's cool. I can't say it's not, but I thought some of you would be interested to hear it either way. What good is a message board if you can't share some fun bits of gossip every now and then?

Just for the sake of argument, let's say this is true for a moment. What would you think about Leavitt as UT's new head coach in 2008?

i dont see Leavitt leaving USF....EVER.  and thats not just wishful thinking.  i just think that if he wanted to leave he would of done it by now.  but you dont leave a BCS conference team that you built, who is ranked in the top 10.

Could CJL be in any better position than where he is now?  He took a program from nothing to the top ten.  We may be NC contenders for a few years.  Anything is possible, but is there even a single good reason he would leave?

If Leavitt were to leave USF (and I laugh thinking about it now), it would be the day Matt Grothe graduates. USF will be in the top 10 for the next three years to come... he'd be a jackass to leave this program anytime sooner. He's not leaving... he knows the OCS is going to be known as 'The House that Leavitt Built'. He can't do that at Neyland stadium.

I am sure if this rumor starts smoking, that Greg and Brett  will investigate.  If they have not already started

Funny stuff...I don't see Jim Leavitt closing the book on his USF story just yet.

I can see him leaving USF one day, but not now and not Tennessee.

But it makes for good conversation.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
