USF vs FAU - could it be a future Big East rivial game?

I have seen on their message board that they want to join the BE but what do you think about it? I think if the BE wants another florida team I would pick them over UCF FIU but in saying that I really dont want to see another BE team in this state.

FAU is a growing school with a great metropolitan area... but you have to realize that the Big East is more -- a lot more -- than football.

USF was picked for the Big East because of the success of our sports other than football and men's basketball... FAU would need a major upgrade across the board to be ready for the Big East.  Get them into C-USA first.

If the Big East were to expand I think the big hurdle would be getting conference members to get past a football only selection or getting another U to accept it.  I know it is blasphemous here to say anything remotely positive about UCF but if the BE were looking for another player they would be crazy to look past UCF.  It is a fact that it is a booming institution that is pouring money into upgrades and already has a relatively higher profile.  No offense to FAU, but that would be a much longer-term bet.

I can see from their perspective, joining the BE might be the goal but A LOT would have to happen for that to be possible. The planets really had to align for USF to be included and I can't imagine that all happening again. The football schools would have to be willing to split from the basketball schools or the Big Ten would have to pilfer a team. So much would have to happen. I would doubt it possible, but I also doubted our invite to the Big East as possible 5 years ago, so I guess never say never.

I agree...they're our biggest rival and being in the same conference guarantees a game every year.  UCF just opened  a new football stadium and is building a basketball arena that seats about 10K so they've definitely got the facilities to move up.  And as for FAU, having an on-campus stadium in 2010 is a start.  I don't know about their basketball arena but they'll probably need something that seats 8-10K.  It's a mighty big leap from the Sun Belt to the Big East.  They'd be better suited for C-USA.
