Mauk, Moffitt, Branch Earn Weekly Football Honors

The BIG EAST Conference has named Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk, USF linebacker Ben Moffitt and Connecticut kickoff returner Tyvon Branch the winners of the league's Player of the Week awards for games through Sept. 30.

Mauk was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after he threw four touchdown passes – all in the second quarter - to lead unbeaten Cincinnati to a 52-23 win at San Diego State. He completed 17 of 23 passes for 257 yards and led the Bearcat offense to touchdowns on six of its first seven drives before coming out of the game in the third quarter.

Moffitt, who was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, also was tabbed as the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week. He had two interceptions, including a 26-yard return for a touchdown, to lead undefeated USF to a 21-13 win against previously unbeaten West Virginia. Moffitt had nine tackles, including two tackles for loss, to lead a USF defense that forced six turnovers against the Mountaineers.

Branch earned honors as BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week after he scored on a 97-yard kickoff return in the second quarter, giving Connecticut the lead for good as the Huskies remained unbeaten with a 44-10 win against Akron. Branch finished with 150 yards on three kickoff returns.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
