TAMPA, Fla. – For the second consecutive week and the third time this season, a USF defensive player has earned national acclaim.

On Sunday morning, Bulls’ LB Ben Moffitt was named Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week.

Last week DE George Selvie earned the honor after racking up three sacks and five TFL against North Carolina.

Moffitt, who did not have an interception coming into his senior year, intercepted two passes against No. 5 West Virginia. He also had a pick and near score against North Carolina in the previous game.

His first pick swung momentum in USF’s favor and put the Bulls ahead for good at 7-0.  The senior leader stepped in front of a Pat White pass in the first quarter and raced 28-yards to the end zone for the game’s opening score.

He also picked off another pass in the fourth quarter and was a shoe-string tackle away from taking that pick to the house.

Moffitt had eight tackles in the game, seven solo, and two tackles for loss.

The USF defense forced six WVU turnovers in the game and limited the potent WVU running attack to 188 yards. The Mountaineers were averaging well over 300 yards rushing per game prior to Friday night.  USF held WVU’s Hesiman candidates Steve Slaton (58 yards) and Pat White (36 yards) well below their averages on the ground.
