Curious to See George

By Pete Thamel

September 25, 2007,  4:18 pm

North Carolina was as a trap game for South Florida last Saturday, coming after the biggest victory in school history – at No. 17 Auburn – and before the Bulls’ Friday home game against No. 5 West Virginia. (Yes, the notion of a program that started playing football in 1997 overlooking an A.C.C. team like North Carolina is funny.)

But the Bulls thrashed North Carolina, 37-10, thanks in large part to a performance by one of the most productive defensive players in college football, the sophomore defensive end George Selvie. In three games, Selvie has 8.5 sacks and 15 tackles for a loss. Both of those numbers lead the nation, despite the fact that U.S.F. has played only three games and most other teams have played four. Not bad for someone who played center in high school.

Selvie’s mettle will be tested this Friday night, along with that of linebacker Ben Moffitt, who will be saddled with the task of slowing down the West Virginia duo of Pat White and Steve Slaton. (And don’t forget about Noel Devine.)

U.S.F. may have the most speed in its front seven of any Big East team, and the Bulls are well coached by the veteran defensive coordinator Wally Burnham and the former Iowa State Coach Dan McCarney who coaches the defensive line. If Selvie can put up similarly big numbers Friday, there could be an upset in Tampa.
