I believe that the NCAA rule is that all of the 7-5 teams have to be taken in a bowl before the 6-6 teams are selected.

Yeah actually I think you're right. Two fewer wins is the cutoff at higher records (i.e., 9-3 vs. 7-5), but they made that rule after the schedules expanded to 12 games that teams with winning records get priority. I'm looking for something in writing.

WPHChris is correct if they don't have a contractual arrangement... since the Big East bowls have a contract with Notre Dame, they could take a 6-6 ND ahead of a 7-5 Cincy or 7-5 Louisville...

However, the Independence Bowl couldn't take a 6-6 ND ahead of, say, a 7-5 Troy or a 7-5 Wyoming.  Which is why Troy went to a bowl game last year while 6-6 Pitt stayed home.

GoBulls83 -- what rule are you looking for? The 2-win rule or the "winning record" rule?

4 more losses by ND and we won't have to worry about them at all.  But I looking for us to go to a BCS bowl.

Probably at 6-6 ND would still bump someone for a bowl.

Actually, they are 0-4 already (first time in school history, started playing in 1887 I think), so they only need 3 more losses.  USC is one.

They are @ Purdue and @UCLA the next 2 weeks, so 0-6 is quite possible. Throw in a home game against Boston College before USC comes to town and ND will quite possible out of Bowl contention by that time.

The winning record rule you explained. I found the explanation in the NCAA postseason handbook.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
