Newly ranked UCF ready for Davis, UNC

From North Carolina coach Butch Davis' vantage point, the world is upside down.

Davis, who coached the Miami Hurricanes from 1995-2000, returns to Florida to face No. 23 South Florida on Saturday, and this time he's the underdog.

"Maybe I'll see if they let us play with 12 or 13 guys," Davis said. "They remind me of some of the defenses we had in Miami."

That might be the only thing he recognizes as both Miami and Florida State are out of the Top 25, and USF is in. And Central Florida is gaining ground.

"It speaks (volumes) to the amount of talent Florida produces in high school football," Davis said. "And how good of a job those teams are doing being able to keep that talent home."

This is the biggest test for Davis' Tar Heels (1-2, 1-1 ACC), who beat James Madison before losing to East Carolina and Virginia by a combined five points.

USF coach Jim Leavitt isn't underestimating UNC.

"I know all about Butch Davis and his staff," Leavitt said. "I know they're awfully good, and well-coached. They could easily be 3-0."

Davis, who was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns for 31/2 years after leaving UM, respects what Leavitt has done in building the Bulls' program.

"I saw when USF started to put the program together, and Jim has built it with stability," Davis said.

In its 26-23 overtime win against Auburn, the USF defense played well and it will need a similar effort against North Carolina, which is averaging 29.3 points and 383 yards of total offense per game.

"I watched the Auburn game, and they earned that victory," Davis said. "(Mike Jenkins and Trae Williams) are the best corners we have played this season."

The Bulls (2-0) have had two weeks to prepare and this week vaulted into the top 25 for the first time at No. 23. Not buying into the hype will be the challenge for the Bulls, who play host to No. 5 West Virginia next Friday.

"The polls don't change what I thought (about our team)," Leavitt said. "Our guys are pretty matter-of-fact, and we're going to come to work."
