per greg's blog............

O-line woes continue: Carnes injured

USF's offensive line, already depleted by injuries, took another potential hit Wednesday afternoon when senior tackle Jared Carnes, who saw significant action in Saturday's win against Elon, had to be carted back to the locker room with a bag of ice on his right knee.

If Carnes can't play in Saturday's game at No. 17 Auburn, it leaves the Bulls perilously thin at offensive tackle. Starters Marc Dile and Walt Walker have been limited by lingering injuries since the start of preseason camp, and USF's top reserves would be three freshmen: redshirt freshman walk-on Jacob Sims and true freshmen Jeremiah Warren and Sampson Genus. The Bulls are already without starting center Nick Capogna, who injured his left knee Saturday, and starting guard Matt Huners, who is recovering from knee surgery this spring.

Coach Jim Leavitt had no information about Carnes' injury, but said running back Moise Plancher, who missed the opener with an ankle injury, won't play at Auburn, putting the running game squarely on starter Ben Williams and freshmen Mike Ford, Jamar Taylor and Aston Samuels.

Wednesday also saw sophomore Danny Tolley, thought to be headed for a medical redshirt due to a chronic groin injury, working in pads with USF's field-goal unit, which he played on last season. Tolley's injury is painful and persistent enough that he had decided to end his college career last month, but later said he would sit this year out and focus on returning in 2008. Now it looks as though he's trying to come back after missing only one game.

If anyone heard Brett on the 1010 interview, he thinks Carnes as a reserve is big.  This is before news of a possible injury.  He is the backup for Walter Walker and Marc Dile.  Both of those guys had cramps issues last week, so we're paper thin behind the starters.  Walker's had injury problems his whole stay at USF, so having him play the entire game is key.  I think our chances are getting slimmer by the day.........

Per both Greg and Brett's blogs, Carnes missed practice today.  This basically means he's out for the Auburn game and leaves USF without any bench player that has seen any time on the field.  They haven't said exactly what the injury is just yet.  Maybe CJL will address it at the Call In show tonight.

mike simmonds said after practice that Carnes has a bruised right knee, and he missed practice because it was being evaluated by doctors. if he gets cleared by doctors, he'll travel with the team and be available to play saturday.
