South Florida Bulls

2006 SEASON IN REVIEW:

Jim Leavitt deserves a ton of credit for the way he has built the South Florida program in a short time. The Bulls have gone to two straight bowl games and are fresh off their first ever bowl win over East Carolina in the inaugural PapaJohns.com Bowl. South Florida finished the 2006 campaign with a 9-4 record, including a 4-3 mark in league play. The Bulls only lost to Rutgers by two points, proving that they can hang with the best that the Big East has to offer. Then, late in November, the club scored a shocking victory over West Virginia on the road in one of the biggest upsets of the season. Four of the final five games of the '06 campaign ended in wins for South Florida, which returns 15 starters on both sides of the ball.

2007 ANALYSIS

OFFENSE:

The quarterback position is an area of strength for South Florida, as Matt Grothe stepped in as a freshman a year ago and one of the most surprising players in the Big East. The versatile Grothe threw for 2,576 yards and 15 touchdowns while also running for 622 yards and nine touchdowns. While he does not have a stud receiver in the fold, players like Marcus Edwards are solid targets who can make plays in the passing game. The best news for the offense is that the entire starting offensive line from 2006 returns. South Florida scored 23.0 ppg a year ago, and there is certainly reason to believe that a slight improvement can be made.

DEFENSE:

The Bulls surrendered fewer than 300 total yards per game a year ago to place second in total defense in the league behind only Rutgers. Seven defensive starters are back, and the secondary is perhaps the greatest area of strength. Senior cornerback Mike Jenkins has NFL-caliber cover skills, including tremendous closing speed. On the other side is Trae Williams, a corner who picked off seven passes a year ago. Senior linebacker Ben Moffitt is a star, as he has started 30 straight games and always seems to be around the ball. The last two years, Moffitt has totaled 25 TFLs. The Bulls ranked 18th nationally a year ago by surrendering just 16.9 ppg, and there is no reason to expect a step backwards.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

As a freshman last season, Delbert Alvarado nailed a 56-yard field goal against Syracuse, and he figures to be a key to the special teams unit this season. Justin Teachey was mediocre as the club’s punter last year, so the hope is that he will improve.

OUTLOOK:

South Florida is for real, as coach Leavitt has brought a great deal of talent to town. No longer is the state of Florida comprising solely of the Gators, ‘Noles and ‘Canes. The Bulls deserve recognition and respect. They will be one of the top four teams in the Big East in 2007 and have enough talent to beat Rutgers, Louisville and West Virginia. Still, a conference crown may be a year or two away.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
