Men’s Soccer Faces No. 5 Virginia Saturday

TAMPA, Fla. – In its final match of exhibition play, the University of South Florida men’s soccer team will travel to Virginia to face the preseason No. 5 Cavaliers Saturday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m.

The Bulls are coming off two home exhibition wins over the University of Tampa and preseason No. 19 Saint Louis, both by scores of 2-0.

Saturday’s test from Klockner Stadium will be a formidable one, however, as UVA finished with a 17-4-1 record and an appearance in the Men’s College Cup Final Four a year ago.  The Cavs’ only preseason date so far this year, against Virginia Commonwealth, was cancelled due to weather.

USF is 0-2-1 against UVA in regular season play since the first time the two teams met in 1985.  The pair last clashed in the NCAA Tournament in 2005, following USF’s first-ever BIG EAST Red Division title.  The match ended in a tie, however Virginia was able to advance 7-6 on penalty kicks, ending USF’s 11th overall trip to the tournament.

Virginia is one of six opponents the Bulls will face this season (exhibition included) to make the NCAA field a year ago.

The men’s soccer team will return home to face in-state rival UCF in the regular season opener, Fri., Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are available by calling 1-800-GoBulls or at www.GoUSFBulls.com.

That is a great call having soccer season coincide with football season, sometimes I think the organizers of soccer go out of their way to make sure it stays irrelevant in the USA (not that I am mad about that).

It's a shame these are exhibition games... wins over these two squads would vault USF into the top-10. St. Louis and UVA have been powerhouses for quite awhile now.
