Football Practice Report - August 22

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida football team continued preseason preparations for the upcoming season with an early morning practice on Wednesday.

The Bulls will return to the practice field tonight for a 50-70 play scrimmage that should run from 7:30 – 9 p.m. The scrimmage is closed to the media and public.

USF head coach Jim Leavitt continues to list starting QB Matt Grothe as, “Day-to-day,” with a hip injury.

Offensive coordinator Greg Gregory said that, “Grothe would be reevaluated tonight after the scrimmage,” and was optimistic about him returning to the field in time to prepare for the Elon game.

Gregory also said that Grothe will be held out of tonight’s scrimmage.

One of the freshmen that has impressed in camp is WR Dontavia Bogan.

Leavitt said Bogan was working as No. 2 option at wide receiver and indicated that he will be involved with the game plan for Elon.

Another development in morning practice was junior Carlton Hill moving back to quarterback.  Hill played QB in junior college and high school and has spent some time behind center as a Bull. It is his third positon in camp. He started camp as a defensive back.  He then moved to wide receiver before landing at QB today.

Leavitt said the move was unrelated to Grothe's injury.

Come back to GoUSFBulls.com this evening for a recap of the scrimmage.

In the meantime, keep your eyes out for ESPN.com’s Big East preview and a story by columnist Ivan Maisel on Grothe and the Bulls.  The preview is scheduled to be released today.

A link and preview of the story will be posted to GoUSFBulls.com.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
