Two 2007 USF Bulls Making Their Mark In Class A Baseball

TAMPA, Fla. (August 14, 2007) – Two 2007 University of South Florida pitchers, Danny Otero (Coral Gables, Fla.) and Yuri Higgins (Tampa, Fla.), are already making their marks in the Class A Short-Season’s Northwest League as Otero has earned 17 saves in 17 appearances while Higgins is just getting started, playing in two games in the past three days.

Otero, who pitches for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (affiliate of the San Francisco Giants), has posted a .53 ERA in 17 appearances, earning a save in each game. He has allowed only one run in 17 innings, allowing eight hits and striking out 11. Otero is holding opponents to a .136 batting average. In the first six appearances of his career, Otero allowed no runs and just one hit while picking up a save per appearance. 

Higgins, who played in his first game on August 9, is a pitcher for the Boise Hawks, an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. In two appearances, Higgins has allowed one earned run in one and one-third inning. 

Otero recently picked up a save against Boise. In the August 12 game, Otero faced three batters, forcing the trio of Hawks to each ground out and allow the Volcanoes to earn the 8-5 victory. 

The Bulls will wrap up their summer in about a month as the short season schedule concludes September 5.

Good stuff.  I imagine both of these teams are low A ball.  Otero sounds like he will be moved up to High A for next year.  If Higgins moves up, Daytona Beach might be his new home.
