Injuries Taking Toll On Offensive Line

Published: Aug 14, 2007

TBO.com Site Search | Tribune archive from 1990

TAMPA - With nine offensive linemen slowed by injuries Monday, University of South Florida coach Jim Leavitt remained optimistic that only two could be "long term."

Leavitt said the injuries are "taking a little bit of a toll on our offensive line. It's not an excuse, but we're losing a little continuity on the offensive line."

Starting LG Matt Huners (torn ACL in the spring) and sophomore G Danny Tolley (groin) are the most serious. Leavitt said Tolley would rest until this weekend.

Other linemen held out of contact drills Monday included three other starters: RT Walter Walker (left ankle), LT Marc Dile (knee) and RG Zach Hermann (flu) and four backups: LG Ryan Schmidt (left ankle), C Kevin McCaskill (right foot), OT Joe Herzhauser (right wrist) and C/RG Sampson Genus (slight concussion).

TE Ben Busbee (right ankle) also was wearing a protective boot, while Leavitt said senior DT Allen Cray has been limited by a hamstring injury. Sophomore LB Chris Robinson (ankle) is off crutches, but isn't expected to return to practice for two weeks.

BACK TO WR: Junior Carlton Hill, the most highly rated quarterback recruit in school history, started fall drills at free safety, but after a week of practice he's been moved to wide receiver.

Hill played his freshman year in 2005 at wide receiver and quarterback, but was moved to safety over the summer.

ODDS AND ENDS: Former Florida State OL Matt Hardrick was scheduled to visit USF Monday, but did not make the trip because of transportation problems, said his mother, Mia Robinson. Hardrick already has met with UCF coaches, but is undecided if he will transfer to a Division I-A or I-AA school, Robinson said. … Leavitt said he expects freshmen FB Richard Kelly, DL Terrell McClain, Genus and RB Jamar Taylor (if he receives a hardship waiver and is eligible this season) to play this season.

Hill can't make the big hits on defense

I would say his hands and athletic ability are too valuable to be on defense.  Big things from Carlton this year.

I am sure that this has something to do with Erskin being out for the season

He will probably be used as Amari is used now (end-around passes)

All the injuries on the O-Line have me worried.  I hope everyone gets healed up an ready to go by opening day.  I would hate to have to put that starting O-Line out there against Elon, let alone Auburn!

I'd like to see Hill RS this year, learn a position he can excel at, and come back in 08 with 2 years remaining.  We are DEEP with talent at WR this year.  He'd be a nice replacement for Amarri in 08.

He's been bouncing around so much his head must be spinning.

They need to get some double sided tape to put on Hill's knuckles during games...

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
