ELON, N.C. – Taking a refreshing break from full pads, the Phoenix sported upper pads only for the ninth session of the 2007 Elon preseason football practice schedule Monday morning on Hunt Field and Tucker Field.

“We had a good, solid practice this morning,†Phoenix coach Pete Lembo said. “There were some highs and lows throughout, but we continued to see some good things from both our veteran players and our new guys.â€Â

The session featured two team periods – the first one consisted of run and play action while the second one focused on two-minute drills – as well as two pass skeleton segments. Quarterbacks Donny Kirby, a red-shirt freshman, and Scott Riddle, a freshman, both led the offense on touchdown drives during the two-minute drill.

The special teams focused their attention on kickoff returns, punts, PAT and field goals. Freshman long snapper Patrick Campbell, junior punter Brandon Lane and junior kicker Andrew Wilcox turned in solid performances during the special teams segments.

The defense was led by red-shirt freshman defensive end Brandon Ward and junior safety Andreas Platt, who snatched an interception during a pass skeleton period.

“Brandon Ward was 195 pounds when we signed him,†Lembo said. “Now he’s 220. Brandon has matured quite a bit in one year and is becoming a leader on defense. He gives relentless effort in practice.â€Â

Lembo also noted that several wide receivers, including senior Michael Mayers, freshman Lance Camp, freshman Sean Jeffcoat, sophomore All-American Terrell Hudgins and junior Bo Williamson, all made plays during the team and pass skeleton periods.

For a team returning alot of players it seems from the article that the freshman are making the most news.

Elawn has no shot. We arent starting PJ at QB this year, so it should be over by the 2nd drive.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
