USF Football Practice Report – Monday, August 13, 2007

Freshman Rise To The Top As Second Week Of Camp Begins

Tampa, Fla. – As the second week of training camp begins a lot of the attention of the 2007 USF football team has been placed upon quarterback Matt Grothe, running back Mike Ford, the team’s receivers and linebacker corps. However one group that has risen to the top and caught the eye of head coach Jim Leavitt has been the freshman class.

“Sampson Genus has had an absolutely spectacular camp so far,” said Leavitt. Sampson Genus will play this year and play a lot. He is 6-1, 310 pounds and very strong with really good feet. He is backing up Nick (Capogna) right now at center. Terrell McClain has done some really nice things and (Richard) Kelly has really done some good things.

With starting receiver and punt/kick returner Colby Erskin tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee over the weekend, the Leavitt will look for a someone to step up to fill that important role. Leading that list is sophomore receiver Jessie Hester, Jr.

“Jessie has taken it upon himself to really step up,” said Leavitt. “Jessie is going to play a lot any way. Another player being looked to is Courtney Denson. Courtney is going top get a lot more reps now. Those two guys we’re looking to have step-up immediately.”

The Bulls will return to the practice field on Tuesday for a single practice beginning at 8:30 a.m. and running to 10:30 a.m.

Love to hear this about Freshmen stepping up.  I thought McClain and Kelly might help immediately.  I hope Edenfield will step up to provide depth at tackle.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
