Sanford To Play In Cape League Championship Series This Week

Maruszak’s Squad Wins West Division, But Misses Finals

TAMPA, Fla. (August 13, 2007) – University of South Florida’s Shawn Sanford, who is part of the second-best pitching corps in the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer, will play in the Cape League Championship Series this week with the Yarmouth Dennis Red Sox.

The Red Sox will begin the best-of-three finals against the Falmouth Commodores Monday, August 13, at 3 p.m. at Red Wilson Field in South Yarmouth, Mass. Game 2 will be held Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Falmouth, Mass., and if necessary, Game 3 will go back to South Yarmouth on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Sanford’s Y-D Red Sox finished the regular season with the league’s best record as they shut out the Chatham A’s 4-0, sweeping the East Division playoffs and clinching a spot in the championship finals for the third time in four years.

Sanford has registered a 1-1 record with three saves in 24.1 total innings pitched with Y-D. The Cinnaminson, N.J., native has made two starts in his nine appearances with the Red Sox this summer, striking out 22 and allowing 22 hits.

Sanford missed games with the Red Sox early in the season due to his two appearances, including one start, with the USA Baseball Team. In those games he produced a 1-1 record in 4.2 innings. He struck out six, and allowed only two hits – both singles – for a .133 opponent batting average.

Yarmouth-Dennis will play Falmouth, who advanced to the finals with two victories over the West Division regular-season winner Bourne Braves, the team USF third baseman Addison Maruszak played for throughout the summer.

Maruszak, from Pinellas Park, Fla., batted .278 this summer in 33 games with the Braves. He crushed 30 hits, including four doubles and one home run, while scoring 14 runs.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
