On the weekend that one freshman class reported for preseason practice at USF, the Bulls picked up an oral commitment toward next year's recruiting class, getting a pledge Friday from Demetris Murray, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound running back from Buford, Ga.

"They're very family-oriented there, and I've always wanted to go to a school in Florida," said Murray, who rushed for 1,090 yards and 20 touchdowns as a junior and also considered offers from Mississippi, Wake Forest and Maryland. "I just felt like I was ready to commit. I knew where I wanted to be."

Murray is USF's seventh commitment for the 2008 class, and the first running back in the group. USF has no seniors among its current running backs, so the Bulls continue to build depth at a key position.

His commitment was first reported in Monday's editions of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Bulls have been making a push into Georgia, and Buford is a suburb on the northeast side of Atlanta. Jim Leavitt spoke last month about how the Big East's success was helping the Bulls "chip away" at the ACC and win battles that they weren't winning in the past, and this seems like a good example of that.

Looks like they have to do a little updating, the kid has grown 2 inches and put on 13lbs. of muscle.

Getting RB commits is good, because when Ford gets 2,000 yards this season and leaves early, we'll need more bodies for 2008  ;D

I love the optimism, E.T.

Off the topic of RB's but other USF vs UCiF recruiting battles:

1) A.J. Tyler (basketball) - he transfered from Clemson and will be suiting up for the Golden Showers this fall. He chose UCiF over us and I can't wait to heckle him about it.

2) Zak Boggs (soccer) - a very strong Forward and UCiF's top scorer last season will transfer to USF and play his final 2 seasons with the Bulls!

It's a great sign to have these solid verbal commits before the season kick's off.

It is it means these kids see USF as a viable option over UF, FSU, UGA, Miami, etc.

A lot of the times these kids would hold out until these schools gave them a definitive no or just stopped calling then they would come looking our way.

We still need that big splash, one which I think we will get this year.
