Mac had success in the Mac before coming to USF, so it really isn't that surprising that he would be considered for an opening at Ball State.    He was hired to be a coach in CUSA and then he ends up with a weak CUSA team in the Big East.  Had USF stayed in CUSA he might have been a decent hire.  It is a very tough order to rebuild a program while making that kind of conference upgrade. 

Mac had his moments at USF.  He deserves a lot of credit for the development of SoJo.  In Seths hands I doubt that Jones becomes an NBA draft pick.

As LakeBull said, Mac had his moments but there weren't enough of those moments to sustain any kind of early, posiitve consistencey in the Big East.
