I still remember Demetrius Woods getting himself suspended for the Western Kentucky game in '98... which was a big deal at the time.

Yeah it sure was...he was the first to get the "I told you so - football is bad" group of professors and other lifers at USF to start screeching.  I think he was the first entry into Knight Light's database as well.

On a more positive note, I remember meeting Jon Simmons at Media Day his freshman year.  He looked lost and intimidated as a freshman.  I thought to myself, this guy looks out of place.  I enjoyed watching him develop over the years and become quite a good player as an upperclassman.  He developed confidence and conviction to go along with some extra weight on that good sized frame.

D. Woods was the best and most exciting player on the field for USF our 1st year.  Guy was in top notch shape, its a shame of what happened to him but if you met him he didnt seem like the type, but I guess most people dont.  :-\

I used to sit at the lunch and dinner tables with him and the other players in Fontana Hall.  Lunch everyone would watch Jerry Springer and dinner everyone would watch rap city.  Hilarious times, the program was new and young and everyone was having fun, its was like high school all over again.  Do the football players still live onthe 2nd floor of Fontana Hall? (or the The Edge for the youngins?)

A combination of Springer and Rap may have led to his downfall...  ;D

Demetrius Woods was our first star on D.  He made a lot of big plays for us.  It is too bad that he also did a lot of stupid things.  Didn't he get into trouble for breaking into someone's pickup on campus?  He is probably kicking himself now for the blown opportunity.

Demetrius Woods was the reason there are no male strippers/football players in Ybor working the ladies... I remember Leavitt telling me he would boot me off the team if he heard I was making money on the side... Demetrius's stage name... It was either Dark Chocolate or Sexual Chocolate. Regardless of what people think of D Woods... I agree with Herm's assessment... he was a great guy to talk to and always gave you respect. He was the most jacked guy that played at USF IMO until "The Combine Freak" Shurron Pierson showed up.

Speaking of Shurron... spoke to a guy who came to the Raiders as undrafted free agent the same year Shurron got drafted. The guy started at Oregon as a Mike backer. He said Shurron was a five tool athlete that just lacked the knowledge to play the game. He was obviously atheltic enough to play, but he couldn't process football per se like a Matt Grothe or Marquel Blackwell in the clutch. It was good though talking USF football with a former NFL guy.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
