It wasn't that it was a charity event, it was the fact that you could make $10,000 winning the event. Gansberry was in it becuase he's a college basketball player and that is a major no no.

As long as he did not accept the money, it is not a violation.  The only violation was that he played in a non-approved event.

Wait, let me get this right?  ", it is not a violation.  The only violation was....."  which one is it?

he is suspended for the cleveland State game because it is against the rules (a violation), rules that should have been known.  its very simple.    I understand he was suspended because the game offerend the winner $, not because its a charity game.  The point is why didnt he know or was told not to play in that game?  Again, I dont think the violation is a big deal, I just hate to motivate an opposing team, on our first game ,with a new head coach, still learning the new system without our best player.

Spin it any way you want, this should have and could have been avoided.

And the event wouldn't have been approved because of the money. If this were a complete charity event, with no benefits and no moentary award the NCAA might have reviewed and approved it once they found out.

However, it would never happen because of the monetary award.

Nevertheless, to rip the kid apart for playing in an event which he accepted no money is rather ridiculous.  We have college athletes beating and raping players, and we're comparing these guys to thugs for playing basketball and NOT accepting money.  Serious overkill.

Jeez, does this board and it's members get paid to debate about semantics?

In the great scheme of things this is no big deal...Gransberry did not accept money, it was a charity event, and got some bad advise....I actually hope that one word of advise the Athletic Deparment DOES GIVE TO IT'S ATHLETES....is to never, ever, never, ever read this board....first they might go cross eyed, second the ignorant rants and ridiculing might incite even the most benevolent person.

LOL- truly pathetic.  and turkey soup....

Any time a player gets suspended for a game it is a problem and somewhat of a big deal.  Spin away, Bien.  LOL-truly pathetic.  he who defends everything, defends nothing.

Bien, are you the board police?    Get over yourself bro, dont you have some false rumors to spread about donor vacations and our baseball field funding.  :D

College athletes must be careful when playing for reward/gratuity (prize) w/o first running it by the NCAA or School Athletic Regulators.  This was no big deal but a $10000 prize is substantial.  Hope they both get to play, and often, in the BE this fall.

In a lot of cases, I'd agree with you. Cases where the suspension could indicate a recuriing problem for the future but this siituation is nothing of the kind. It's only a minor problem in that we'll be short our best player for one ooc game.... it is, however, in no way, shape or form a big deal.
