I thought Crist had already vetoed it, and there was a story in the Trib today that we are raising our graduate students tuition 10% and that he already vetoed it.

Jim or any other guru

Here is my brother's scenario. He is starting a Master's Program at USF this fall. Will he be vulnerable to the tuition increase? I think the answer is yes.

If the answer is yes, then it really sucks that he did have the pre req that they wanted him to take during summer A. Taking that one class might have saved him a substantial amount.

Crist vetoed a 5% flat increase at all Universities.  This bill allows UF, FSU, and USF to increase their tuition above the rates of other state schools.

They really needed this to keep up with the other schools out of the state of Florida. FSU, UF, and USF were talking about freezing the enrollment because of the veto. It is good that the governor has thought this through, and has allowed this to happen.

Matt, Graduate tuition is not included in the differential tuition plan...

"The Board of Governors may establish a uniform maximum [glow=yellow,2,300]undergraduate[/glow] tuition differential that does not exceed 40 percent of tuition for all universities that meet the criteria for Funding Level 1 under s. 1004.635(3), and may establish a uniform maximum undergraduate tuition differential that does not exceed 30 percent of tuition for all universities that meet the criteria for Funding Level 2 under s. 1004.635(3)."

However, current law allows each university to set their own graduate tuition rate:

"The Board of Governors, or the board's designee, may establish tuition for graduate and professional programs, and out-of-state fees for all programs. ... However, adjustments to out-of-state fees or tuition for graduate and professional programs pursuant to this section may not exceed 10 percent in any year."

As noted earlier, USF is proposing to raise their graduate student rates by 10% this year -- so he would not have been able to save money because they didn't offer a class he needed before July 1.

USF has gone fishing with UF academically some time ago - Tier 1 University means bookoo monies for USF - with that comes a heafty price.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I don't believe that any tuition revenue can be spent on an OCS.  Which is the way it should be.

Ahh, okay.

Crist was going to veto the bill but all 11 public university presidents met with Crist and explained to him that they all agreed with the bill so he didn't veto it but he also didn't sign it which effectively let it become law.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
