USF Quarterback Named to Maxwell Award Watch List

TAMPA, FLA. (June 25, 2007) USF sophomore quarterback Matt Grothe, the 2006 Big East Rookie of the Year, has become the first USF player to be named to the Maxwell Award Watch List. The Lakeland, Fla. native is one of 65 players on the list for the award that is given to the most outstanding college football player as selected by the Maxwell Football Club.

Grothe was among the naton’s leaders in total offense in 2006, passing for 2,576 yards and running for 622 more as a freshman. He threw 15 touchdown passes and added nine on the ground.

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell. Brady Quinn of the University of Notre Dame was the recipient of the 70th Maxwell Award for his outstanding performance in 2006.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced in early November and three finalists will be announced November 26th. The winner will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 6, 2007. The formal presentation of the award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City in March 2008.

Does the Maxwell award always go to an offensive player?  Usually a quarterback?

Grothe's performance in 2006 opened this door. He is well deserving of this honor.

Some players on this list are on there solely on perceived potential.

Congrats Matt !

Go BULLS !!!

RU's Rice was 3rd in 2006.

Meh...I really don't think this is that big of a deal. I know its a pretty nice honor, but there 64 other guys on this list.

If he makes it as a finalist or even semi-finalist that would be a great honor.

We should also congratulate Big Ben Moffit. He's been on the Nagurski Watch list last year and is also on this years list.

Somebody who we should really rally around his Mike Jenkins. I'm pretty sure when the Thorpe award watch list comes out he will  be on it but he's the only one from USF that has a legit shot at winning one of these awards.

Anyone have the Maxwell list? I'd like to see how many sophomores are on it. That would be quite an honor even if Grothe doesn't make it to the semifinal list.

I have the list. There are 10 sophomores, include Grothe and Florida's Tim Tebow.

I think it's a big deal, how many other BULLS have been on this list to start the season ?

We've had a BULL on the Butkus List many times and each time I think it's a big deal.

Moffitt being on the Nagurski Watch list is also a big deal. And sure he'll be on the Butkus list in 2007 also.

Go BULLS !!!
