If you had $1 million . . .

I would use $300,000 to help pay for the softball stadium, and then 200,000 on Cooper getting fixed up.

If you had $1 million, you would donate it ALL to USF ?

Uh, no.

one million dollars invested with a 5% annual return only grosses $50,000 per year.  Face it folks, a miillion ain't what it used to be.  After sharing with my family and church, there wouldn't even be enough to retire on.  Would I give to USF?  Yeah, but it would be in the form of better season tickets.

Now if the premise of the question were "If you won ten million..." I would have a different answer.

No if I only had a million.  Like some one said on this thread 1 million is that much today.  After getting my family and such set up I would probably put the rest in the bank for invest.  So more than likly it will be as small as say 5,000, until it grows in the bank.  I thought you were asking where would we donate 1 million.

If I had a million bucks, it would be invested.  I would increase my donation level of course, but I don't think i would just up and donate a chunk of it

I'm with you there.  Family comes first... and you need to think about that in the long term.  1 million might seem like a lot just by hearing the term, but over time, it isn't that much.  Invest wisely, and make that million work for you as good as it can, and then indirectly, you're annual donation will probably go up, and up, and up... which will work out every bit as well as any one time donation you would have done due to getting the lump sum in the first place.

Most people are able to get 10% return on their investments when they have that much money... so let's split the difference and say you get $75,000 per year in dividends, interest, and equity growth.

Now, you're right, can't really retire there.  So keep working, use the $75,000 as a supplement -- donate at least $10,000 and perhaps $25,000 annually... max out season ticket purchases for all sports... buy lots of USF merchandise... travel to every football game, and many basketball games... attend the athetics auction and bid on things... sponsor all golf tournaments...

Family and other charities could still benefit... and the principal would remain invested.

1 million in gold matey? I would probably donate $10,000 or so into athletics, then put about $800,000 into my ship. The rest would be on rum and pleasant company.

Amen!

Seriously if I had a million dollars just to donate (meaning I had millions to live off of) then I'd put about 25% into athletics, and 75% into the school of engineering.  While athletics are important, they are not the most important function of the University by a long shot.  However, due to the advertising effect and the amount of enjoyment they produce, I think 25% is still reasonable.

The school of engineering at USF is the best out of the state institutions, and arguably better than any private school in Florida.  What school (aside from the school of medicine) has the protential to generate more on the return investment, not even counting research grant funds?

Can we say Engineering Building 4?

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
