The only USF player to get national recognition in the SportingNews is Justin Teachey.

Teachey is a great Bull and asset for the team, but are they talking about the rubgy kicks?

Well if you consider he had quite a few rushing hards on fakes directly attributed to his rugby style, and hardly ever had his punts returned for good yardage and hardly ever blocked... he was pretty good.  Yeah, he makes the fans sweat a bit because it looks dangerous, but he is VERY good at it.

I for one like Teachey as the punter. He's laid down some monster kicks...the horrible average last year was in large part due to Petrov's woes. I find it hard to believe Teachey will have a better year this year though...people started to play up on the kick last year and field it on the fly which kills the roll.

I like the Rugby style.............why because it works and is very easy to fake if you have a punter with some speed

Dont mind the rugby style but the Yards per has to drastically improve (Teachy averaged 38.2ypp thats good for 85th in the nation last yr). not killing your defense with bad field position is part of playing championship level football.  At the end of the season the rugby style lost some of its effectiveness as teams figured out the ball will very rarely be kicked for big yardage so the returners would set up more shallow which lead to some good returns.  I dont think the rugby style will be near as effective if teachy doesnt show teams he can really boom it so the returners have to respect his leg.

...the horrible average last year was in large part due to Petrov's woes.

Petrov had 1 punt for 25 yds, not exactly an avg killer. Teachy's average was 38.2 yds, not very good at all. Though he was instrumental in the win against Pitt a new direction is in order. Not sure how he gets 10th best punter in the NCAA.

if people play up for the rugby kick, that is when you traditional punt it right over their head.  Teachey did very will mixing it up last year.  Only one game did any team really read it well.  I forget which game it was, but it was one of the last couple.  Pitt THOUGHT they were reading it well by stacking the line and JT ran all over them for consecutive first downs.

With what punter on our roster?  None of them even averaged 40yds an attempt?  If we could boom the ball from a traditiional set we wouldnt be running this rugby stuff.  The Brandon Baker years show us that we dont prefer to use the rugby set.

Interesting ranking by TSN.  I checked the NCAA stats and our net punting ranked 113th out of 119 teams last year as was our punt return defense.  Our kickoff return defense was 56th.  Kickoff and punt coverage definitely wasn't our forte last year, which would have improved Teachey's stats.
