Who will rise to the challenge and surprise in 2007?

South Florida (2006 Record: 9-4, 4-3 Big East)

There isn't a coach in college football that has done a better job than Jim Leavitt.

Leavitt, who is 70-43 in 10 seasons at South Florida, has guided the Bulls to back-to-back bowl appearances, while winning the inaugural PapaJohns.com Bowl, 24-7, over East Carolina to conclude last season. South Florida entered Division I-A football in 2001, and joined the Big East Conference in 2005, after a brief stint in Conference USA. South Florida enjoyed its best season to date by finishing 9-4 in 2006, but this program has only scratched the surface of its potential. Freshman All-American Matt Grothe returns at quarterback and eight starters are back from a defense that ranked 25th in the country in total defense and 18th in scoring defense. South Florida travels to Auburn for its second game of the season, so we'll find out if this team can compete with the heavyweights in 2007. If anything, they'll compete in the Big East, as they proved last season with a 24-19 win at West Virginia.

Outlook: The Bulls may not travel to Auburn and win (although they should play the Tigers tough) but that doesn't mean this isn't a quality team. They host West Virginia, Louisville and Cincinnati, so a Big East crown is a possibility. Remember, the Bulls drubbed then No. 9 Louisville 48-14 in Raymond James Stadium in 2005.

Nice article and very much on point.

If we win at Auburn that will be B I GWinning our games at home against WVU and UL should push us high up in the polling.  Our biggest concern should be not losing on the road or losing games we should win.

These guys are dedicated to finding any crumb about USF, well done.  I think this year is a big challenge for Mr. I wanna hug Gurlybull, if he can get his coaches to setup to the next level make some great calls in the big games (Auburn) our program will really be headed to the next level.  Not to mention the players must perform in every game.  No loosing on the road to Syracuse or UConn.

Consistent performance is one of the key items we have lacked in the past.  We cannot continue to lose games like Cincy last year, UConn the year before that, and Army the year before that.  Each year, we lose a game that we should have had no chance of losing.  Until we stop things like that from occurring, we will not be at the next level.  We will not garner enough respect in the media and college football community to be ranked consistently, and earn decent bowl games, if we continue to lose these kinds of games.

I think I am more jealous of gurlybull, than of Leavitt  8)

Like the press we're getting and think it will pay off in early votes.

All these expectations are making me nervous about the upcoming season. I remember when the basketball team had high expectations during the Seth era only to not live up to the expectations. We should be good if you look at what we have on paper, but we all know that looking good on paper has never won anything.

Where do we find this stuff?  Answer:

1) surfing other team/conference message boards such as the Big East message boards.  And college football message boards like Rivals (that's where I found this one).

2) Seaches for articles on USF by search engines like TOPIX.  (my personal favorite for finding articles)
