Well, it was my tradition as a student. I was a face painter with my horns hat on! When I graduated, I glued the horns on my cap and USF stickers all over my gown, thus retiring the horns. However, I always wear my Dr. Seuss hat proudly. Another addition is a green/gold wig that I bought for the PJB game that I will now wear with pride as well.

I heard at Virginia Tech games, the "hokie pokie" is done at some point during the game. That's pretty neat.

I think traditions come with time and acceptance by the masses, not by a group trying to implement one. It just sort of happens. As for originality, it's going to be hard starting a tradition and not have another school say we copied theirs. We've only got 10 years of football, which is by far one of the youngest, so only time will tell what happens.

Did Albert and Alberta ( UF Gators) just come with time or did some individual or group come up with the idea?  The Gator Chomp?

How about the University of Oklahoma's Sooner Schooner, did it just fall from the sky or was it a carefully planned concept?

Does the Iconic Bull lack originality?  Why should it be hard for USF to come up with original ideas?  Do you believe USF lacks people with creative minds?  If not then why?

I think the actual mascots were implemented.. but the Gator Chomp or the FSU tomahawk, I'm sure those just grew from a bunch of people doing them.  Like Miami and their "U" that they make with both hands.. i never remember seeing that in the 80's and early 90's.. hell, Miami wasn't even called the "U" until recently-- 1st time i saw it was on monday night football when the players would introduce themselves and the school they went to.

as for us, i think we will always be criticized for copying Texas.  Our bullhorns are like the Longhorn symbols and even when we bring in this supposed live bull to the field, Texas does the same thing with Bevo.

At the Miami game in '05, a friend of mine who is both a UM (bach.) and USF (mas.) graduate, that they started doing the U sign because the president (at the time) was upset with the way the student section represented during an FSU game.  Apparently the UM students did their own tomahawk chop, with a certain finger extended.  The president suggested that UM students were better than that, and needed to find a less 'vulgar' way to show their school pride.

Not sure how accurate the explanation is, but that is what I was told.

As for people upset that traditions are being "made" -- well, yeah, that is how traditions start.  Someone thinks of a good idea, shares it with as many people as possible, and enough agree to do it.  It has to be made... very very few things that last start completely spontaneously.

I didn't mean it like that. What I meant is when we get start a thread like this and 15 different people state how they are gonna do a cheer during kickoffs.

What would be more natural is for the STUDENTS to get some stuff together because once the whole student section gets involved, the stadium is likely to follow.

Understand, you can't force traditions on people. Real traditions become just that, because they stand the test of time. Mascots and logos are not really traditions (except for the Stanford tree). Also, most of the programs and schools you are comparing, are over 100 years old. We are just over 50/10. I would love to have our own original tradition, but odds are against us in the originality department, especially with Texas/Colorado. Just let it happen, don't force it.

Everyone saying they take time is right...

tra·di·tion /trəˈdɪʃən/ –noun

1. the handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, etc., from generation to generation, esp. by word of mouth or by practice.

2. something that is handed down.

3. a long-established or inherited way of thinking or acting.

4. a continuing pattern of culture beliefs or practices.

5. a customary or characteristic method or manner.

However, traditions can not get started without someone doing it the first time -- when it wasn't a tradition.  "Back then" it was "hey, I've got an idea"... and for every idea that became a tradition, I'm sure there were dozens of other ideas that never caught on.

But you can't have a tradition without one person starting the actions that become traditional.

No, idiot. Traditions start with magic, and they randomly appear out of no where...

Vandalism can be tradition...look at Auburns tradition of Toilet Papering Tomes corner after a victory...as long as it's inncocent vandalism lol  ;D. Hopefully no Toilet paper will be on the ground or in trees Sept. 8.

Now I said I considered painting MLK, but I can see nothing wrong with pimping him out with a shirt hat and some Beads.

I'll even print out my own shirt, but of course it would be some sort of Bush League slogan against the other team or for us. Actually when homecoming draws near I'll have a Bush League MLK Homecoming contest.

#8, of course has been mentioned as a tradition, and I think the circling bull horns that go with that are great and will only get greater the more people who get into it. I also like the "headbanging horns" during Bulls On Parade/the BOP-inspired down cheer--the go bulls hand sign moved in a hedbanging type motion. I'd like to hear more people shout "Go Bulls!" with HOT at the end of Wooly Bully.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
